The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Film | The Son of the Sheik with Live Score by Alloy Orchestra / Ghost Train Orchestra

Perennial favorite ALLOY ORCHESTRA is simply “the best in the world at accompanying silent films.” (Roger Ebert) Armed with their signature “rack of junk” along with various zippy synthesizers and expressive noisemakers, they bring old films to life in singular fashion. And on a beautiful summer night in the park—that’s as good as it gets. Their latest score tackles the 1926 adventure/drama classic THE SON OF THE SHEIK, Rudolf “Latin Lover” Valentino’s final performance on the silver screen. Valentino is in top form starring as both the wise old Sheik and his impulsive son Ahmed in this wild tale of passion, betrayal, and redemption. Arguably a better film than the 1922 original, this sequel was a box office smash, grossing over $1 million in its first year. When Valentino died suddenly on the eve of its release, the ensuing mass hysteria further solidified his status as the great hunk of the silent era. To set the stage, GHOST TRAIN ORCHESTRA digs deep into Harlem and Chicago jazz of the 1920s. Their third album, featuring fresh arrangements of standards by Cecil Scott’s Bright Boys and Charlie Johnson’s Paradise Orchestra, is due for release in May. Prepare for a nine-piece that packs the stage and “creates its own electrifying musical gold.” (NYC Jazz Record)

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: As You Like it

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
