Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Perched high atop the 41st floor overlooking Manhattan, a rooftop vegetable garden has been cultivated. Now growing for its third year, the organic garden illustrates a foray into urban agriculture, producing vegetables and herbs that are used throughout the hotel’s food and beverage program. The 1,344-square foot garden is situated 384 feet above Manhattan. With eleven planted beds and four robust barrels planted throughout summer and fall, vegetables include arugula, mesclun lettuces, heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, peppers and fall squashes. Herbs include basil, mint, thyme, oregano and cilantro. The garden utilizes only organic plants, soil, fertilizer and insect deterrents, including eco-friendly ladybugs. Led by Executive Chef and Chief Gardener Brian Wieler, the tours offer insider access to the private garden, which has breathtaking views of Manhattan and is closed to the public. During the tour, Chef Wieler discusses the hotel’s culinary and rooftop garden program, with a Q and A session and special surprises afterwards.

Concert | West African Sounds: Vieux Farka Touré / Tamikrest / DJ Dakar

The heir apparent to the African guitar throne, VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ — son of the late Malian six-string magician Ali Farka Touré — plays “…original guitar music of such fluidity, technique, rhythmic invention, and passion, that it is virtually unequaled.” (AllMusic) Throughout his career, Touré has been part of spectacular collaborations: his debut album featured the kora master Toumani Diabaté as well as some of Vieux’s father’s final recorded contributions; other projects have featured work with Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, John Scofield, Sidiki Diabaté, and the Israeli superstar Idan Raichel, with whom he has released two albums. 2015 will see him release Touristes, an unexpected, genre-bending collaboration with NYC-based singer Julia Easterlin, who appears tonight as a special guest. TAMIKREST plays a fiery brand of trance-inducing desert blues. Since their 2009 debut Adagh they have been hailed as the spearhead of a new generation of Taureg musicians. Their latest record, the intensely beautiful Chatma, confirms their place as the spiritual descendants of their Malian countrymen Tinariwen. DJ DAKAR, from the Pikine neighborhood in his city of birth via Harlem, will set the stage for a transcendent night of West African sounds.

Theater | The Gospel of Fat Kathy: A Play About Teens in the 21st Century

The Gospel of Fat Kathy follows the story of five high school kids as they struggle to find the connection between technology and belief in the twenty-first century. The show features an appearance from God, a modern retelling of Oedipus, a Greek chorus and a Dragon made out of a trashcan. The Gospel of Fat Kathy is the product of #thecrowdfundproject. After a successful indiegogo campaign, #theatrecompany devised an original show in twelve days, using suggestions of words, props and costume pieces from it's crowdfunders. #theatrecompany is a company of young theatre professionals. All members of #theatrecompany are recent graduates and current college students ages 18-22. #theatrecompany is dedicated to creating honest and contemporary new work that is fantastical, minimalistic and relevant. Theater | Classical Theatre of Harlem presents Shakespeare's The Tempest

This rendition of the famed play sets Prospero’s magical island on the enchanting island of Hispaniola, home to the Dominican Republic and Haiti – two tiny nations with storied battles for independence. With the characters of Ariel and Caliban representing the same longing for freedom and fighting spirit of Haiti, the play highlights the dynamics of freedom and captivity, imprisonment and rebellion, and authority and tyranny.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: As You Like it

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
