From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Screening | Documentary: Marc Silver's 3 1/2 Minutes, Ten Bullets (2015)

On Black Friday 2012, four African-American teenagers stopped at a gas station to buy gum and cigarettes. One of them, Jordan Davis, argued with Michael Dunn, a white man parked beside them, over the volume of music playing in their car. The altercation turned to tragedy when Dunn fired 10 bullets at the unarmed boys, killing Davis almost instantly. This seamlessly constructed, riveting documentary explores the danger and subjectivity of Florida's Stand Your Ground self-defense laws by weaving Dunn's trial with a chorus of citizen and pundit opinions, and with Jordan Davis' parents' wrenching experiences in and out of the courtroom. 85 min. Skype Q&A with Lucia McBath, mother of Jordan Davis, to follow the screening.

Concert | Indie Rock: The New Pornographers / Thao and The Get Down Stay Down

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS — A.C. Newman, John Collins, Blaine Thurier, Dan Bejar, Kathryn Calder, and Todd Fancey — are a true supergroup, “virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock.” (NPR) Since 2000 they have released six records, with many pauses between for distinguished solo careers and other projects. Each time they come together, the results are outstanding; their longevity, persistence, and consistency as a band speak volumes about how much fun they continue to have doing it. Last year’s Brill Bruisers, a universally acclaimed album that hit many end of year best of lists, found them in top form. They’re back at the Bandshell almost 10 years to the day after they first graced the stage. Led by the beguiling frontwoman Thao Nguyen, alt-folk iconoclasts THAO AND THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN have worked with a laundry list of vaunted artists including Andrew Bird, Mirah, Joanna Newsom, and Laura Viers and have toured with the NPR show Radiolab.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: As You Like it

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
