Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Tour | Veggies with a View: Rooftop Garden Tour

Perched high atop the 41st floor overlooking Manhattan, a rooftop vegetable garden has been cultivated. Now growing for its third year, the organic garden illustrates a foray into urban agriculture, producing vegetables and herbs that are used throughout the hotel’s food and beverage program. The 1,344-square foot garden is situated 384 feet above Manhattan. With eleven planted beds and four robust barrels planted throughout summer and fall, vegetables include arugula, mesclun lettuces, heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, peppers and fall squashes. Herbs include basil, mint, thyme, oregano and cilantro. The garden utilizes only organic plants, soil, fertilizer and insect deterrents, including eco-friendly ladybugs. Led by Executive Chef and Chief Gardener Brian Wieler, the tours offer insider access to the private garden, which has breathtaking views of Manhattan and is closed to the public. During the tour, Chef Wieler discusses the hotel’s culinary and rooftop garden program, with a Q and A session and special surprises afterwards.

Concert | Bluegrass Revivalists: Punch Brothers / Sarah Jarosz

No band embodies the raging bluegrass revival better than PUNCH BROTHERS, a virtuosic five piece made up of Paul Kowert (bass), Chris Eldridge (guitar), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Gabe Witcher (fiddle) and mandolin savant Chris Thile, that shifts its emphasis effortlessly “from instrumental wizardry to playful storytelling” (NY Times). The band’s fourth Nonesuch album, The Phosphorescent Blues, addresses with straight-up poignancy and subversive humor the power and the pitfalls of our super-connected era. While the record explores themes of alienation and modern digital discord, it’s also their warmest, most emotive and elegantly melodic work to date. The multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter SARAH JAROSZ is an artist cut from the same cloth. Raised outside Austin, she was a rising star of folk and bluegrass before she even graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music and is now a veteran at the ripe old age of 23. Her collaboration this year with Sara Watkins and Aoife O’Donovan is making waves across the Americana landscape; she’s here with her own band celebrating a recent move to Brooklyn.

Tour | Dark Side of the High Line Tour

The skeletal remains of the High Line’s elevated tracks set the perfect scene for a spooky evening. Join a journey to the creepier side of New York City’s most unique park. On this tour you’ll hear tales of the strange eccentric who lived below the tracks and saved them from demise, the curse of a West Side Cowboy who fell to his death from the elevated track, and the children who haunt the street formerly known as Death Avenue. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.

Film | Documentary: Rogelio Alex Ruiz Euler and Jon Wetterau's Mexican Dream (2014)

This documentary is about indigenous Mixtec immigrants from one pueblo in southern Mexico who go to a small town in Minnesota to work in the meatpacking factories and slaughterhouses of an iconic American company. The effects of migration on the old community there and the assimilation of the new, along with the effects on families back home, are seen through three families across both sides of the border. The film examines labor, social alienation, poverty, community dissolution, dispels myths about undocumented immigrants and shows how they are manipulated by deliberate neglect of immigration policy by both our governments and big business. 54 min. Q+A with director Jon Wetterau and Rogelio Alex Ruiz Euler.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: As You Like it

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
