Book Discussion | Fifty Shades of Grey Panel, with Erica Jong and Others

The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, the Twilight-fan fiction turned S&M erotica blockbuster, still sits at numbers one, two and three on the New York Times bestseller list, and beat out Harry Potter to become the fastest-selling paperback of all time. But is it a positive sign for American sexual culture that so many people have embraced this explicit pageturner, or does the success of E.L. James’ steamy trilogy demonstrate something less progressive? Join the feminist icon and writer Erica Jong, Daniel Bergner, whose The Other Side of Desire was an open-minded exploration of fringe sexual cultures, Melissa Febos, former dominatrix and author of memoir Whip Smart, Ian Kerner, sex counsellor and author of She Comes First, and Roxane Gay, a writer for Salon and The Rumpus who called out 50 Shades of Gray for perpetrating negative cultural messages about female romance, on hand to discuss.

Concert | African Folk Music with Regina Carter’s “Reverse Thread”

Carter’s most recent release Reverse Thread takes us through the world of hypnotically beautiful African folk melodies. Lauded as one of the finest violinists of her generation, Carter captures both the essence and allure of the original music through a lens of contemporary interpretation. To achieve the uplifting and stirring result, Regina added an accordion and kora– the West African harp traditionally played by village storytellers — to her longstanding rhythm section. Kora virtuoso Yacouba Sissoko was brought on board to help recreate the spirit of passing stories from generation to generation. The result — unlike anything previously heard — is a haunting and beautiful compliment to Regina’s sumptuously seductive violin.

Author Reading | John Yoo discusses his book Taming Globalization

In 1997, a Mexican national named Jose Ernesto Medellin was sentenced to death for raping and murdering two teenage girls in Texas. In 2004, the International Court of Justice ruled that he was entitled to appellate review of his sentence, since the arresting officers had not informed him of his right to seek assistance from the Mexican consulate prior to trial, as prescribed by a treaty ratified by Congress in 1963. In 2008, amid fierce controversy, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that the international ruling had no weight. Medellin subsequently was executed.
