Other | Book Launch: Maria Loboda's A Guide to Insults and Misanthropy

Maria Loboda plants a little garden which manifests bitter or sad feelings through the symbolic language of flowers of the Victorian era. The work changes continuously through her choice of flowers, running the gamut between boredom (onion flower) and anticipation (gooseberry), hatred (basil) and disdain (yellow carnation). Loboda considers language an artistic material amongst many others that, for her, also include botany.

Opening Reception | Pastel Works by Brazilian Artist Tiago Gualberto

Tiago Gualberto in his first New York City exhibition. Tiago's work focuses on the interplay between cultural practices and social development. He has lead cultural and art education workshops for socially vulnerable/disadvantaged children and adolescents in Brazil, giving him further insight into the socioeconomic divide. His own Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage is also a source of inspiration for Tiago Gualberto. The juxtaposition of culture and ethnicity is highlighted through his unique use of chalk-like white pastel, a fragile medium that he uses as a tool of expressive strength.

Performance | Remitting Default: Sonic Diagrams

Kenya (Robinson) will report back from the midway point of her time spent as the inaugural artist in an online residency program, Analog. Over the past year, the artist developed Remitting Default: A Psycho-economic Performance of Getting Skooled. This project records her experience as a black MFA student at Yale University while struggling to maintain her personal finances and secure fiscal support. Rendering her private education public, (Robinson) posted a daily record of the available balance in her personal checking account. To mark the midpoint of this durational performance of the mundane, (Robinson) will again transcend privatized aspects of culture and language in an attempt to present her own “personal fiscal rhythm.”1 She invited five artists to translate her year’s worth of numerical data into sound. These collaborators will present audio material that references the dichotomies of vulnerability and empowerment, digital and analog.

Employing its signature "Panoramic Theatre" staging style, the company will escort audiences, pausing to hatch a confusion of plots and declare various passions against a backdrop of waterfalls, bridges, and shady groves.

Concert | Pop Music: Patrick Watson with Loney Dear

A chance to hear from Patrick Watson’s newest album Adventures In Your Own Backyard.
Adventures... was made at home after a grueling five-year run that saw Watson and his band - bassist Mishka Stein, guitarist Simon Angell, and drummer Robbie Kuster - tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris award-winning Close To Paradise. Hailing from the small city of Jonkoping, Sweden, Loney Dear’s primary member Emil Svanängen first began recording homemade, overdubbed tapes of delicate, folkish indie pop in the early 2000s. After several years of touring stateside and abroad, Loney Dear released Dear John, its fourth full-length in January 2012. His album—the appropriately titled Hall Music, is an expansive record that finds Svanängen closer to creating the type of orchestral music he has always sought to bring to life on stage (whether he’s actually playing with an orchestra or not).
