Lecture | CANCELLED***The Risks of Internationalized Conflict in the Caucasus: Sources of Overspill, Escalation and Stabilization***CANCELLED

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. In the twenty-five years since the end of the Soviet Union, the Caucasus region (north and south Caucasus) has played a defining role in shaping security and political dynamics across the wider Euro-asia region. The conflicts of the Caucasus have been at the centre of these developments. Drawing on a three year study into the dynamics of armed conflict across the region in the post-Soviet period, the research presented here highlights growing interlinkages between the region's conflicts, the emergence of a Caucasus regional conflict and security complex, and a 'breakout' of conflict from the region into neighbouring conflicts in Syria/Middle East and Ukraine/Black Sea. With the conflicts of the Caucasus increasingly interlinked with wider security developments, the presentation will consider where the risks of conflict escalation lie and sources of stabilisation that might be reinforced to prevent further deterioration of security in the region. Speaker Neil Melvin is Director of Studies at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). At SIPRI, Dr. Melvin is also responsible for work on Russia and the Euro-asia region, with a particular focus on security and conflict issues in the Caucasus and the Black Sea region.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all. Tours are Mondays and Fridays at 2pm, and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10am.

Classical Music | International Contemporary Ensemble: Winter OpenICE

Resident artists launch the 2017 OpenICE season with a diverse and extensive array of chamber, electro-acoustic, improvisatory, and multimedia work — sharing their process, commissions and collaborations in a series of workshops and performances. This first installment features Wolfgang Rihm’s Musik für drei Streicher, performed by ICE strings: Josh Modney, Kyle Armbrust and Michael Nicolas. The International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) is an artist collective committed to transforming the way music is created and experienced. As performer, curator, and educator, ICE explores how new music intersects with communities across the world. The ensemble’s 35 members are featured as soloists, chamber musicians, commissioners, and collaborators with the foremost musical artists of our time. Emerging composers have anchored ICE’s programming since its founding in 2001, and the group’s recordings and digital platforms highlight the many voices that weave music’s present.
