Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm until Feb. 14, 2017.

Opening Reception | Edward Clark: Paintings

One of the early Abstract Expressionist New York painters, Ed Clark first turned to abstraction when in Paris in the early fifties, citing particularly the influence of Nicolas de Stael's abstract paintings with their flat, but richly textured areas of color. He soon developed his own painting process, employing the push broom to create wide strokes of paint that swept across his canvas surfaces. Like many artists of the New York school, Clark works large and paints on the floor, pouring and pushing acrylic paint to create his large abstract paintings.

Dance Performance | Hannah Ma's Rauhnacht: Dance Work about the Enigma of Existence

Rauhnacht is a dance theatre piece based on archaic rites from the alpine and asian regions. The nights between 24th of December and 6th of January are called 'Rauhnächte', the closest translation for that could be "rough nights." The historic records say that in this time, men are able to meet the spirits from the past, as well as other mysterious creatures who travel through space and time. The piece questions the human duality of good and evil and the human relationship toward the enigma of our existence - where we come from and where we go to. It makes a merging of different realities on stage accessible for the spectator. Rauhnacht combines Hannah Ma's previous pieces: 'Dieu/Monstre', 'ARENA' and 'Exist Is The Repeat of Practice'

Historians and critics have praised Blanche Wiesen Cook's towering three-volume biography of Eleanor Roosevelt, the essential portrait of an amazing "first lady" who towers over the twentieth century. Join Cook's third appearance to read from the final volume, which takes us through World War II, FDR’s death, the founding of the UN, and Eleanor Roosevelt’s death in 1962. It follows the arc of war and the evolution of a marriage (including her lesbian relationships), as Eleanor Roosevelt realized the cost of maintaining her principles even as the country and her husband were not prepared to adopt them.
