Lecture | The Politics of Russian and Western Responses to Refugee Displacement from Eastern Ukraine

Russian justifications for aiding separatists in Eastern Ukraine pose the largest challenge to western conceptions of humanitarianism since the end of the Cold War. Likewise, the displacement of nearly one million people “at the heart of Europe” has generated competing claims from Russia and the West over the victimhood of the people of the Donbas. This contention challenges not only national and state boundaries but also commonly held ideas on the relationship between territory and rights.
Speaker Raphi Rechitsky is an assistant professor of sociology at the European University at Saint Petersburg, and recently finished his PhD at the University of Minnesota. He is currently completing a monograph on refugees in Ukraine, and a study of Ukrainian refugees in Russia.

Film | Mark Donskoy's The Unvanquished (1945): One of the First Holocaust Films

Remarkably, The Unvanquished was not just the first Soviet film that portrayed mass murder of Jewish people — it was one of the first Holocaust films worldwide. It remains one of the rare films that portray the “Holocaust by bullets,” the mass executions that killed millions of Soviet Jews even before the death camps. The execution scene was filmed on location, in Babii Yar in Kiev, a place which came to symbolize the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. This film will be introduced by Olga Gershenson, Professor of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and author of The Phantom Holocaust: Soviet Cinema and Jewish Catastrophe (2013). Professor Gershenson will also lead a Q&A after the film screening.
