Gallery Talk | Gallery Tour: Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey

In 1977, Romare Bearden (1911-1988) created a cycle of 20 collages and watercolors (miniature variations of his collages) based on Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Rich in symbolism and allegorical content, Bearden’s “Odysseus Series” created an artistic bridge between classical mythology and African-American culture. The works conveyed a sense of timelessness and the universality of the human condition, but their brilliance was displayed for only two months in New York City before being scattered to private collections and public art museums.

Opening Reception | 2 British Artists: Conrad Atkinson / Margaret Harrison

Paintings, drawings, and other works by Conrad Atkinson and Margaret Harrison, British artists who have been working at the front line of art and activism since the late 60s. As a couple, each artist works separately, but both meld the methods of conceptual art with controversial subject matter. Harrison's first solo exhibition in London was closed by police as pornographic in 1971; Atkinson's Silver Liberties, an impartial view of "The Troubles," was actively excluded from the Ulster Museum in Belfast in 1978. The studies for that installation are now in its collection.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Bill Smith's Synthetic BioStructure

Smith, who has a degree in both sculpture and micro-biology, uses his knowledge of science not only as a basis for inspiration but as his media as well. While artists since the Renaissance have used scientific ideas to create masterpieces, Smith uses actual techniques of the scientific and natural world to create sculptural assemblages that draw on the intricate systems and inherent beauty found in nature. Taking scientific laws and principles as a guiding form, Smith has created a highly aesthetic visual language that he uses to create complex, often mechanized, sculptural works that bridge the gap between art and science.

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Lucy Skaer's Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones poses questions about the material nature of things and the relation of matter to representation. The exhibition comprises a ‘twin’ form that has been copied into a series of different mediums. The original object (made up of materials, prototypes and samples from the artist’s former New York studio) is replicated into a new copy in a different material. Each sculpture is a copy of its predecessor, not of the ‘original.’ The nature of the sculpture is translated into a new embodiment, a metamorphosis of form.
