Lecture | Rockefeller Center: Architecture, Sculpture, and the Rockettes

An art deco masterpiece, Rockefeller Center was the largest private building project ever undertaken. It represents the commercial and artistic vision of John D. Rockefeller, and demonstrates what money and taste can produce. This project brought together architecture and urban planning, intellectual programs on the history of human progress and rich, theatrical ornament. It was erected despite political intrigue and the upheavals of the Depression, which makes it all the greater miracle. Dr. Seth Gopin, the speaker, is known to several generations of Rutgers University students for his dynamic lectures on the history of art. The intertwining of art, history, and culture fascinate him. Prior to his retirement he also held several administrative positions at the university, including Director of Global Studies, and he furthered the course of international education in the United States and Europe.

Opening Reception | Centered, New Photographs by Israeli Artist Naomi Leshem

Centered comprises 10 photographs, each of a solitary figure – five male, five female--placed in a challenging physical or psychological situation by Leshem. Each was thus forced to confront and cope with the difficult position by finding a sense of order and balance; they each find a way to be centered. While Leshem photographs the figures in stasis, this deceptive calmness is reached only after much struggle.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Shanna Waddell's ( it's like ) roadside stuffed animals

In this new group of works, Waddell’s fascination with cults – religious or personal – continues to serve as a vehicle for broader existential themes. These are tough paintings, which Karen Rosenberg, in a New York Times review, assessed as forging a “confident style best described as post-apocalyptic and post-Expressionistic. It’s hallmarks are radioactive colors, corrupted sterile and spiritual imagery, and sheer painterly bravura.”

Opening Reception | Sculpture: Li Hongbo's Tools of Study

With what appears to be impeccable recreations of carved porcelain masterpieces, the sculptures are in fact entirely comprised of thousands of layers of paper. Li Hongbo's stunning, stretchable, paper sculptures, inspired by both traditional folk art and his time as a student learning to sculpt, challenge our perceptions. With a technique influenced by his fascination with traditional Chinese decorations known as paper gourds--made from glued layers of paper--Li Hongbo applies a honeycomb-like structure to form remarkably flexible sculptures.

Author Reading | Heidi Boghosian discusses her book Spying on Democracy: Government Surveillance, Corporate Power, and Public Resistance

There isn't a day that goes by without reports of spying abuses by the National Security Agency. Since June 2013, when Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor, leaked to the Guardian UK and the Washington Post, it has become clear that the U.S. government is conducting mass surveillance of its own people. While violating constitutional principles at home, the government is also monitoring phone calls, emails, and other communications of America’s allies and other innocent people abroad. How did we get to this truly Orwellian moment? What role do corporations play in making this eavesdropping and spying possible? What can we do to protect ourselves? Join a conversation with the author and Lewis Lapham, who authored the foreword to her book. This stimulating evening will include ample time for audience Q&A.
