Lecture | The Situation of Latino Gay and Bisexual Men

As sexual and ethnic minorities, Latino gay and bisexual men operate within the margins of society and in the periphery of mainstream sexuality and culture in the US. In an attempt to look beyond the concepts of men that have sex with men (MSM) and the down-low, this presentation situates Latino gay and bisexual men in the social, economic and legal realities of marginalization and immigration. The presentation will contextualize what Munoz-Laboy has phrased the "low-profile" status of Latino male bisexuals. The low-profile concept reflects the role of social, legal and spatial dimensions that result in Latino gay and bisexual men living under the radar with respect to their sexuality, socioeconomic and immigration statuses.

Opening Reception | New Paintings by L.A.-Based Artist Allison Miller

The Los Angeles-based painter in her first solo presentation with the gallery. Miller's paintings attest to the evocative possibilities of abstraction. Imbued with a vibrant and dissonant musicality, her hand-drawn lines, geometrically-inclined forms and structural use of patterning coalesce into a graceful unification of disparate energies. Drawing inspiration from a diverse and unlikely meeting of influences, most recently Vuillard, Fontana, and Magritte, the work seeks to render the uncanny and the absurd in abstract form. Miller has shown extensively, including presentations at ACME, Los Angeles; the Orange County Museum of Art; the Art Gallery of Calgary, Canada; Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills; D'Amelio Terras, New York; and the Las Vegas Museum of Art.

Author Reading | Priscilla Gilman discusses her book The Anti-Romantic Child: A Story of Unexpected Joy

Gilman is the daughter of literary agent Lynn Nesbit and the late theater drama critic Richard Gilman. Through her memoir, full of lyricism and light, she explores the complexity of our hopes for our children, our families, and ourselves, and the way in which experience can alter and lead us to reimagine those hopes and expectations. Using Wordsworth's poetry as a touchstone, she speaks intimately of her poignant journey through crisis and disenchantment to a place of peace and resilience. Through her courageous account, we discover how events and situations often perceived as setbacks can actually inspire and enrich us.

Concert | Musical-Literary Collage: Elysium performs works by 2 composers killed in the Holocaust

In remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust, this musical-literary collage is a testimony to the creative energy, imagination and humanity of two outstanding composers: Pavel Haas and Viktor Ullmann. While interned in the ghetto and transition camp Terezin (Theresienstadt), despite degrading living conditions, despite hunger and pain, despite fear in the face of terror and death, they continued to be creative. Their art helped them to endure the daily suffering. In the fall of 1944, Ullmann and Haas were transported to Auschwitz and killed there. But their music was saved and survived the Holocaust. The songs by Pavel Haas and Viktor Ullmann are complemented by pieces written by artists who were persecuted by the Nazis but could escape and found a safe haven in the United States. Among those artists are Paul Aron, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Robert Stolz, Richard Beer-Hoffmann, and Hans Sahl. Soprano Jeannie Im, Baritone Bruce Rameker, and narrator Gregorij von Leïtis present these beautiful and moving pieces. They are accompanied at the piano by Elysium’s Music Director Dan Franklin Smith.
