Opening Reception | 3 Art Shows: Figuratively Spealing / Degrees of Abstraction / Portal to Enigma

Three exhibitions which explore the rich potential revealed through the creative power of art. Figuratively Speaking investigates the varying sources of inspiration that motivate and direct artists in their imaginative process. Combining a reflection on the most esoteric levels of experience with an understanding of the innately physical nature of the world, these works display a sensitive and emotive comprehension of what it means to be human. The art in Portal to Enigma looks to the hidden secrets and mysteries that help to define existence as we know it, approaching these intriguing topics from a variety of intelligent and innovative perspectives. The result is appealing, thought-provoking and ultimately represents a call to alter the way we view the world and each other. The artists of Degrees of Abstraction concentrate on encapsulating the essence of what they see and sharing their unique viewpoint with their audience. Focusing on form, shape and color in their determination to portray their personal vision, they achieve the ability to construct their message in universal terms as well.

Discussion | The Funny Side of Crime

With moderator, Clare Toohey and panelists Nancy Martin, Tom Straw and Lois Winston of Mystery Writers of America -- The New York Chapter. Smart aleck detectives. Impulsive amateur sleuths. Incompetent crooks. Self-important – or self-deluded – politicians. Mix some of them – or all of them- together and you have the cast for a humorous mystery. While crime might not be funny, human nature is, and the gang that tunnels into the wrong building, the sleuth whose car is always wrecked and the PI who’s always missing a few clues never fail to amuse us. Lecture | On Bureaucratic Technologies and the Future as Dream-Time

The twentieth century produced a very clear sense of what the future was to be, but we now seem unable to imagine any sort of redemptive future. Anthropologist and writer David Graeber asks how this happened. One reason is the replacement of what might be called poetic technologies with bureaucratic ones. Another is the terminal perturbations of capitalism, which is increasingly unable to envision any future at all.

Concert | Lucia Pulido, Colombian Singer

Lucia Pulido is a Colombian singer with one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene today. She has an experimental style marked by a distinct vocal sophistication, and has participated in various projects, ranging from traditional Colombian music to jazz and world music. Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos from the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for her musical creativity. Lucía's vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería), funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra), which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully. For this special celebration and a commemoration of 30 years of creation Lucia Pulido will perform music from her old and new repertoire accompanied by some of the greatest musicians she has played with in NY since moving here in 1994.
