Opening Reception | Remarkable Treasures: Folk Art from the Allan Stone Collection

From primitivist painting, antique carousel animals, and cigar store figures, to weather vanes, store signs and prison art, this exhibition gathers over twenty five rare, prized, whimsical and bizarre folk art treasures from the collection of legendary art dealer and collector Allan Stone. Though he is most recognized for handling New York School artists such as Willem de Kooning and Joseph Cornell, Allan Stone had a covetous appetite for any aesthetic object that manifests formal vitality, visceral intrigue, unselfconscious conviction and personal vision. Combined with passionate connoisseurship, this appetite brought together the extraordinarily rich cross section of folk art and Americana from which this exhibition is drawn.

Book Discussion | Book Club: Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez

Soon after the fall of the Taliban, in 2001, Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan as part of a group offering humanitarian aid to this war-torn nation. Surrounded by men and women whose skills–as doctors, nurses, and therapists–seemed eminently more practical than her own, Rodriguez, a hairdresser and mother of two from Michigan, despaired of being of any real use. Yet she soon found she had a gift for befriending Afghans, and once her profession became known she was eagerly sought out by Westerners desperate for a good haircut and by Afghan women, who have a long and proud tradition of running their own beauty salons. Thus an idea was born.

Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Tim Scott / Cleve Gray

TIM SCOTT IN THE 60s 70s - An exhibition of sculpture by Tim Scott. Often compared to Brancusi and Matisse for his distillation of movement and color, Scott’s work unfolds into space with geometric precision. His sculpture from the 1960s and 70s draw from a wellspring of narrative inspiration. The artist himself noted in 1967 that sculpture “can achieve poetry in which the language itself is invented, is a product of pure analysis and conception.” From a crucible of basic geometry Scott constructs intricate spatial metaphor. Despite its weight, Bird in Arras pushes against gravity, arching through the air as if in mid flight. Though his forms are suggestive, it is precisely their lack of direct reference that lends to the full force of their imaginative power. CLEVE GRAY: SILVER AND GOLD, 1967 is the artist's first solo exhibition at the gallery and will explore his series of monumental canvasses from that year. Typical of the artist’s breakthrough into abstraction, theses works establish Gray as a master of color and material. Gold and silver float against a backdrop of varied color, alive with an alchemical glow. They alternate between explosive energy and contained reflection, between the universal and the highly personal. Above all they reflect the artist’s lifelong commitment to and sensual, bodily understanding of his medium.

Other | Feather Hat Variations: A Sculpture, a Video, and a Story about Moctezuma’s Feather Crown

The Aztec headdress of Moctezuma is part of the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Mexico wants it back, but what’s not clear, is whether Moctezuma ever wore a feather crown. Mahony is a collective of artists based in Vienna: Stephan Kobatsch, Jenny Wolka, and Clemens Leuschner. They have brought a hat and a feather to New York, a place that is impartial to the Austrian-Mexican dispute. Opening Reception | Michael Scott's Black and White Line Paintings 1989 - 2011

Scott describes the process of returning to this formula in his work over the years: “Over the last twenty five years my work has taken several forms of expression, from concentric circle or target paintings, to black and white line paintings, to photographs, to cartoon-inspired drawings, to paintings that can be described as psychedelic ‘candyland’ themed landscapes, to small thickly painted encaustic abstractions. However, over this period of time, the most predominant works are the “highly optical” black and white line paintings done since 1989. These are probably the works for which I am best known."

Slide Lecture | Susan N. Herman discusses her book Taking Liberties: The War on Terror and the Erosion of American Democracy

The author takes a hard look at the human and social costs of the War on Terror. A decade after 9/11, it is far from clear that the government's hastily adopted antiterrorist tactics--such as the Patriot Act--are keeping us safe, but it is increasingly clear that these emergency measures in fact have the potential to ravage our lives--and have already done just that to countless Americans. This illustrated lecture is a wake-up call for all Americans, who remain largely unaware of the post-9/11 surveillance regime's insidious and continuing growth.
