Talk | On the Frontlines of the Fight for Ukraine: Resisting Moscow and Rooting Out Corruption in Kharkiv


A presentation by Ihor Raynin, Governor, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. Accompanying the governor will be members of the Ukrainian parliament and leading businessmen. Governor Raynin will discuss the efforts of his administration to combat Moscow's massive propaganda efforts directed at his region, which borders Russia and to implement badly needed political and economic reforms. Last summer, Kharkiv took the lead in Ukraine with its police reform, transforming the corrupt and inefficient Soviet-era militsiya into a modern, nimble, Western-style police force. Lunch will be provided.

Talk | 'God Is Emancipation to You - To Me, He Is Oppression: Secularism, Gender and the State'


Drawing on original interviews, this presentation will interrogate how religious women negotiate and contest secular policies of the state and religious policies of their faith. Bringing these women into sharper focus troubles standard accounts of secularism as necessarily emancipatory. This presentation will urge us to reckon with secularism as a unique mode of state power that can serve to liberate but also to discipline women political subjects. Anna Di Lellio will present her new film documenting the June 12, 2015 art installation Thinking of You by Alketa Xhafa Mripa, which displayed five thousand dresses in the football stadium of Prishtina, Kosovo, to honor thousands of survivors of wartime sexual violence. It is a story of art and women’s activism to change the culture of isolation, resignation and shame surrounding these survivors.
