Opening Reception | 2 Art Shows: Kianja Strobert / Fred Holland

Kianja Strobert's Giant, made over the span of the past year, is a marked departure for the artist. Strobert's practice of using unconventional materials to create complex and layered abstract compositions has expanded in size and variation; molded shapes emerge from the surface and break into the gallery space. For SSAPMOC, Fred Holland presents recent sculptural work characterized by his use of diverse materials such as glass, copper pennies, bricks, plaster, and pillows, setting an elegant and elegiac tone through meticulous balance and juxtaposition. Lighthearted works such as Buoy and Henry XV embody a kind of elevation - or levitation - of common materials to lightness or immateriality.

Concert | Max Reger: The Man and His Music

“Max Reger: the Man and his Music” will be performed by some of the best students of Mannes College, in honor of the 100th year since Reger’s death. The program will be presented and curated by Donald Wagner, a member of the Mannes Board of Governors and a long-time Reger enthusiast and scholar. Reger was a composer whose legacy has been filled with contradictions. Celebrated in his time as a leading member of the avant-garde and one of the key modernists of the day, he was also criticized for being a weak imitator of Brahms and for being unable to escape Bach’s shadow. Fiercely defended by his supporters, he was also the subject of withering critical attacks- both professional and personal. Despite achieving tremendous fame during his lifetime, his music quickly receded from concert stages after his death.
