Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Author Reading | Nicole Rudolph discusses her book At Home in Postwar France

After World War II, France embarked on a project of modernization, which included the development of the modern mass home. In At Home in Postwar France, Nicole Rudolph argues that modernizers looked to the home as a site for social engineering and nation-building, designers and advocates of the modern home contributed to the democratization of French society, and the new French home reflected architects’ and residents’ understandings of modernity. Rudolph suggests that the modern mass home played a vital role in shaping new expectations for well-being and happiness.

Discussion | The New Wild West: Money and the 2016 US Presidential Election

During the 2016 cycle, the United States’ campaign finance system finally and completely jumped the shark. Candidates raised hundreds of millions for SuperPACs which may have as much, if not more, influence over outcomes than the actual campaigns themselves. How did this transform campaign strategy? What are the implications for governance? And is there anything citizens can do to reverse this trend? Witness and question a highly influential panel of campaign operatives as they discuss the new Wild West world of campaign finance: - Zach Allen, Democratic fundraising consultant - Raj Goyle, Member, Obama 2012 National Finance Committee and former Kansas legislator - Christina Greer, Associate Professor of Political Science, Fordham University - Jack Oliver, Finance Chair, Right to Rise PAC, SuperPAC supporting Jeb Bush - Adam Smith, Communications Director, Every Voice - Ken Vogel, Chief investigative correspondent, POLITICO - Moderated by Jeff Smith, Assistant Professor

Talk | Making and Breaking the Category of Ephemera: The Eighteenth Century as Test Case

"Ephemera" is not a thing but a classification. The category of "ephemera," like the category of "literature," is not transparent, timeless, or universal, but a classification, existing in history, that has done and continues to do powerful rhetorical, practical, ideological, and disciplinary work. Paula McDowell discusses how collectors, librarians and archivists, literary scholars and others have defined "ephemera" since the 1960s, and earlier in the past. In eighteenth-century in Britain, arguing that the categories of "ephemera" and "Literature" were reciprocally constructed as part of an attempt to control the spread of print.

Jazz | Reimagining Michael Jackson

Bassist and composer Iris Ornig is one of the most original female voices on today's New York jazz scene. Since her arrival in New York City in 2003 from Germany, she has played with an impressive roster of some of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians in New York including Gretchen Parlato, Ambrose Akinmusire, Joel Frahm, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Michael Rodriguez, Rebecca Martin, Allison Miller, Sachal Vasandani, Helen Sung, Marcus Gilmore, Dan Tepfer, among others. Iris Ornig was a huge fan of Michael—and she still is! He was truly a master of his style of music, as well as a supremely creative dance innovator. Beginning in 2015, Iris decided to work on arrangements of Jackson’s hit songs to honor his creative spirit through jazz. She began to twist tunes, shift rhythms, explode arrangements and explore new harmonies. It was a real challenge for her as a musician, composer and arranger. Her goal was to interpret Michael’s music in brand new ways to honor the “King of Pop” as a jazz artist.
