Discussion | Music, Fascism and the Holocaust

Europe and the United Nations commemorate the victims of the Shoah each winter on the date of Auschwitz's liberation in 1945; this annual academic event explores issues of discrimination and crimes against humanity. In previous years, the event broadened its focus to explore groups that were targeted in the racism and xenophobia of the Nazi and Fascist regimes, and that suffered and died along with the millions of Jews. This year, the Holocaust Remembrance will focus on music, Fascism and the Holocaust.

Workshop | Intro Class: Insight Meditation

With Paul Weinfield. Insight meditation — the practice of mindfulness developed in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition — is a straightforward, practical and compassionate approach to spiritual and personal development. It offers us a very effective way to reduce stress, let go of habitual, painful thinking patterns, and develop concentration, ease, well-being, and a deep understanding of the relationship between our body and mind. Through this practice, we learn to live with a more open heart and relate to life more skillfully. In this course, we will discover the fundamentals of this path—the practices of sitting and walking meditation, and the cultivation of mindfulness skills in our daily lives.

Opening Reception | Marcia Kure's Grey: Abstraction and Figuration

Inspired by her recent residency at The V and A, London, Marcia Kure continues to embrace abstraction and figuration through sculpture, watercolor and collage. Making a formal and ideological transition within the work, Kure pushes towards abstraction as a means of negotiating the hyper-realism of modern modes of communication and dissemination. In processing current events from natural to social disasters she addresses abstraction of the physical body through a variety of mediums that grapple with laws of nature and culture.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Island Views by Susan Brownell

Susan Brownell lives in a spectacular location, on an island off the Washington coast. She is constantly immersed in vistas of sea and forest. It is largely this immersion which she duplicates in creating the large scale of her paintings. She also uses some visual cues to barns, sea life, fields, and the fir trees which are her surroundings. However, she works away from strict realism, towards a distillation of the essence of her island habitat, as it occurs uniquely to her. As such her paintings are referenced to nature, but are pure individual invention.

Discussion | Serial and the Podcast Explosion

Since its October debut, Serial has taken the podcasting world by storm. A spinoff of the public radio show This American Life, Serial is now the world's most popular podcast, with more than 5 million downloads and 1.5 million listeners per episode, according to iTunes. While this fame is partially due to the show's intriguing tale of a real-life murder case from 1999, it also speaks volumes about the public's growing interest in podcasts. David Carr of The New York Times will moderate a discussion with Sarah Koenig, host and producer of Serial; Alex Blumberg, creator of the podcast StartUp, former producer of This American Life and founder of NPR's Planet Money; Benjamen Walker, host of the podcast Theory of Everything and one of the founding members of Radiotopia; and Alix Spiegel, a founding producer of This American Life and co-host of the new NPR series Invisibilia.
