Panelists: Leith Mullings, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at CUNY; Dennis Tenen, Assistant Professor of Digital Humanities and New Media Studies at Columbia University in the Department of English and Comparative Literature; and Lela Prashad, co-founder and Chief Data Scientist at NiJeL. Concert | Forgotten Fame: Music of Mozart and His Contemporaries

The program features the works of three composers who worked around the same time, and whose ties to Paris helped acquaint them to each other. The 18th-century Alsatian composer Jean-Fredéric Edelmann, whose fate was met by the guillotine, was admired by Mozart although his music fell into obscurity; when the much-admired J.C. Bach died in 1781, Mozart proclaimed “it’s a sad day for the world of music,” however his work soon faded from public notice. The works on the program were published in 1779, 1780, and 1781, respectively. The sonata by Edelmann most likely will enjoy its North American premiere. With: Karen Marie Marmer, violin; Dongsok Shin, fortepiano.

Lecture | Jane Austen's Hatred

In 1939, psychologist Denys Harding explained to the Literary Society of Manchester that English “gentleman of an older generation” had completely misread Jane Austen. The novelist, he announced and subsequently argued in the pages of F.R. Leavis’s Scrutiny, was no delicate satirist. Instead, she was a “regulated hater,” who managed and finessed the subtle “eruption of fear and hatred into the relationships of everyday social life.” Harding’s essay changed the current of Austen studies, permanently replacing the Victorians’ gentle Jane with an author of fierce social vision, in possession of an impeccable, if not pathological, linguistic control. This talk traces a misanthropic Austen in literary studies, from critics’ portrayal of a sadistic, commitment-phobic man-hater, to its ample compensations in Janeite culture as a wistful bride-never-to-be or as the magical match of her own romantic hero. Driving the preoccupation with Jane Austen’s feelings is an abiding and unsettling sense of her distinctive dispassion—what Charlotte Brontë condemned as her “insensibility” and the critic Reginald Farrer praised as her “aloofness.” Lecturer Wendy Lee, a writer in residence in the Wertheim Study, is an assistant professor of English at Yale University, where she specializes in eighteenth-century British literature.

Lecture | Crossing Paths:
The Diversity in Mexico-U.S. Migration

Although Mexicans in the United States are a diverse population, this diversity tends to get lost
in scholarly work and in the popular press. All too often, our attention is grabbed by the number of Mexicans that enter the country each year or by
 the “average” characteristics
of the group. Speaker Filiz Garip helps
us consider the diversity in the Mexican migrant stream, which, for more than a century now, has remained stable in its presence, but changed remarkably not only in its composition and origins, but also in its destinations and settlement patterns in the United States. Filiz Garip is associate professor of sociology at Harvard University and the author of the forthcoming book Crossing Paths: The Diversity in Mexico-U.S. Migration.

This panel discussion brings to light multiple overlapping emergent fields in food and design, exploring how design goes beyond creating objects, envisioning experiences, systems and connections. Topics include designing with food, the science of food design and nutrition, food hacks, and designing for food services in the built environment. Guest Speakers: • Moderator: Fabio Parasecoli, Associate Professor and Food Studies Coordinator • Stephani Bardin, artist and curator • Pedro Reissig, designer • Brian Sullivan, pastry chef and product designer

Author Reading | Kristin Reynolds and Nevin Cohen discuss their book Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City

Urban agriculture can be an important part of creating a just and sustainable city. Growing leafy greens and juicy tomatoes does not in itself lead to changes in the political and social structures that cause inequities in the food system and environmental injustice. However, many gardeners and farmers are using urban agriculture to address inequalities, advocate for policy change, and advance social justice beyond the garden fence. This forum will discuss the work of these activists, including the strategies they use, the challenges they face, and how farmers and gardeners and their supporters can advance social justice through urban agriculture.

It is an opportunity for graduate students to demonstrate what they have learned thus far in their studies, and to explore new types of movement and choreography.
