Discussion |
Is tension inevitable between Albany and NYC? Or is it just that there’s a new mayoral administration and an election-year governor, and press and politicos shining the spotlight in search of every conflict? As Mayor de Blasio seeks to fulfill campaign promises and pursue the agenda that got him elected, a popular Governor Cuomo has his own program to fulfill. Will the city and state collaborate? Or will diverging fiscal and political priorities cause more conflict, more publicly than in the past? With: - Michael Benjamin, political columnist, New York Post; former NYS Assemblyman (D-Bronx) - Bill Hammond, political columnist, New York Daily News - Thomas Kaplan, political reporter, The New York Times - Liz Krueger, New York State Senator (D-Manhattan)

The Affordable Care Act represents a monumental change in the delivery of health care in the United States. After withstanding a constitutional challenge, the ACA is on track to maintain its scheduled implementation, although some of its most controversial provisions will not be fully effectuated until a future date. Nonetheless, individuals, employers and taxpayers of all types must prepare for the new system. Daniel Mazzola examines some of the ACA stipulations including "shared responsibility payments", premium assistance tax credits available to individuals and qualifying small businesses, exchanges where health insurance can be purchased, equirements for large employers and the cost/levels of coverage for NYS residents.

Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years, which have resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes and eating establishments.

Before achieving renown for his electrifying 1950s James Stewart westerns, Hollywood director Anthony Mann (1906-1967) created a brilliant cycle of black-and-white crime thrillers, including such film noir masterworks as Raw Deal (1948), Side Street (1950), and Desperate (1947). Tough, uncompromising, and often beautifully conceived, these Mann thrillers of the 1940s touch upon everything from illegal immigration and working class struggles to intense studies of the criminal mind in post-World War II America.

With Alysia Abbott, Kia Benbow, Mathew Rodriguez, and Sarah Schulman. Even though AIDS was identified (as GRID) in 1981, we now know that people were dying from it ten to thirty years before. Of those who died of AIDS, many had children. The amount of people whose parents died of AIDS may number in the hundreds of thousands nationally, and in the tens of thousands in New York City. Yet they have never been heard from as a community. This event is to start this conversation.

A sound and image performance by David Watson. Watson has been a participant, observer and fan of New York City street parades. As an experimental musician he is drawn to the combinations of organization and disorder, sound and noise. This has led to him to making original pieces for three pipe bands in Hobart, Australia; a game piece in an empty storage facility in Los Angeles; and a "sonic progress" by a brass band through the city of Wellington, New Zealand. Parade is the original video iteration of these works and includes live sound.
