Opening Reception | Charles Harlan's Ishtar, New Site-Specific Work

Drawing inspiration from Land Art of the 1970s, Harlan avails himself of the most common materials at hand - including such hardware store staples as ladders, shipping palettes, and one-ton metal pipe - to create his large industrial works. Huge in scale, Minimalist in form, and shown both indoors and out, Harlan’s art has been referred to as Duchampian in its reliance upon readymade components, deceptive simplicity, and spatial humor. His stacking and layering of recognizable, utilitarian materials renders surprisingly potent forms that invite unexpected associations. Based in New York, Charles Harlan was born in 1984 in Smyrna, Georgia. He graduated from New York University in 2006. Recent exhibitions include Rachel Uffner Gallery, Karma Gallery, JTT Gallery, Martos Gallery, Socrates Sculpture Park, Maccarone, and Cleopatra's, all in New York.

Lecture | Does the Integration Context Matter? The Immigrant Second Generation in Europe and the U.S.

Most studies on the education, occupation, identity, religion, and social relationships of children of immigrants in the U.S. and Europe attempt to link those factors to the education and labor-market position of their parents and to their cultural or ethnic origins. Maurice Crul, professor in sociology at the Free University in Amsterdam and the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, offers a different perspective. By looking at ethnic groups from similar socioeconomic backgrounds and the ways in which they are variously received across the Atlantic, he places the spotlight not on differences between immigrant groups but rather on opportunities and barriers in the countries that receive them, allowing us to understand better how various national policies affect the future of the second generations in both European countries and in the U.S.

Responding to Edward Said’s seminal theory of Orientalism and to its critics, they consider how the orientalist tradition and its reception have been interwoven with the rise of philology, the formation of disciplines, and the establishment of a literary canon.

With Peter A. Sokolowski, Editor at Large at Merriam-Webster, Inc. What makes a person look up a word? When do you use a dictionary? Workshop | Intro Class: Deep Listening

To deepen our listening, to listen more accurately, genuinely and fruitfully, we need to master two related abilities: listening to the other and listening in ourselves. We must be able to attend to our own inner process, and yet not get lost within ourselves and become inattentive to others. Deep listening is a process that allows us to find this balance. Hope Martin, a leading teacher of the Alexander Technique since 1987, will lead you in three different contemplative forms to help us develop our ability to listen to ourselves.
