Talk | “How Do You Document Real Life”: A Tale of Rent, Jonathan Larson's Floppy Disks and Digital Forensics

On February 4, 1992, Jonathan Larson saved a Microsoft Word document that grew, over four years, to become the musical Rent. Although Larson saved and resaved the file multiple times, at least some of the earlier drafts can be recovered thanks to Larson’s personal archival practices and a feature called “fast save” that was embedded in his copy of Microsoft Word 5.1. In this talk, Doug Reside, Digital Curator at the Library for the Performing Arts, will discuss the process he used to recover these early drafts and what his process suggests for the work of curators, scholars, and archivists in the future.

Symposium | Objects in Performance

The recent phenomenon of object-invested experimental dance and performance echoes the resurgence of the object in recent philosophy (for instance, in Graham Harman's Tool Being and Guerrilla Metaphysics, Mario Perniola's The Sex Appeal of the Inorganic, or Silvia Benso's The Face of Things), literary studies (Barbara Johnson's Persons and Things), critical theory (Jane Bennet's Vibrant Matter), critical race studies (Fred Moten's In the Break); as well as in the renewed interest in the concept of the object in the visual arts (with the exhibitions Part Object Part Sculpture; or Not to Play with Dead Things). This resurgence of the object also has implications for studies on subjectivity. If, as Deleuze once said, “the status of the object is changed, so is the subject's," it is crucial to investigate the contemporary nature of this phenomenon. The Objects in Performance Symposium will gather a group of renowned American, German, and international scholars and artists, from a variety of fields and perspectives, to present their most recent research on the matter. The environment will be such as to stimulate exchange and conversation between disciplines, and between artists and scholars. With Barbara Browning, Franz Anton Cramer, Eleonora Fabião, George Ferrandi, Jenn Joy, Heather Kravas, Thomas Lehmen, André Lepecki, Eva Meyer-Keller, Sarah Michelson, Ann Pellegrini, Allen S. Weiss, Norah Zuniga Shaw.

Screening | Bill Morrison: A Modern Master of Silent Film

Bill Morrison has reinvented the lost art of the silent film–often using decaying footage from old silent movies but also creating his own luminous, evocative world out of new images and new music. This series looks at a selection of Morrison’s major works, all done in collaboration with some of the finest new-music composers. The opening and closing films are shown with live orchestral accompaniment: The Miners’ Hymns features a riveting, brass-heavy score by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, played by the Wordless Music Orchestra; and the grand finale, Decasia, brings the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble to perform Michael Gordon’s score. In between, the new film The Great Flood is paired with music by eclectic guitar hero Bill Frisell, and Spark of Being includes an electro-acoustic score by trumpeter and bandleader Dave Douglas. Featuring: Decasia.

Materials shown are likely to include an excerpt from Ralph Bakshi's Coonskin, a minstrel show from the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco, Little Black Sambo, Bert Williams performance footage, excerpts from African Pygmy Thrills and Our Gang, footage of the Harlem Globetrotters, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Muhammad Ali and Duke Ellington's Black and Tan Fantasy and mid-century Black home movies and travelogues (Europe!
