Talk | Finding Hope in Times of Despair

"The election of Donald Trump has generated an atmosphere of anxiety and fear unprecedented in the history of the modern presidency. And rightly so. The future looks uncertain but dark. However frightening for progressives, it is especially so for vulnerable minorities — Muslims, immigrants, people of color, as well as fellow citizens who receive their health insurance from the Affordable Care Act and are one medical bill away from financial ruin. But think global warming, and we are all imperiled as the fate of the planet ostensibly rests in the hands of Mr. Trump, a climate-change denier. People are anxious and a sense of despair is understandable. But human beings cannot remain in despair for long, and anxious for even less so. At some point we must reclaim our hope. Speaking for myself, I abjure false hope. I am emotionally averse to Pollyanna-ish assertions of cheeriness when the facts speak otherwise. So my question is, can we find sources for an empirically-based hope? I think we can, and I will be examining these sources." --Speaker Joseph Chuman

Film | Special Advance Screening: Raoul Peck's I Am Not Your Negro

Built exclusively around James Baldwin's words, I Am Not Your Negro delves into the complex legacy of three lives (and deaths) that permanently marked the American social and political landscape. Framing the unfinished work as a radical narration about race in America, Peck matches Baldwin's lyrical rhetoric with rich archival footage of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, and connects these historical struggles for justice and equality to the present-day movements that have taken shape in response to the killings of young African-American men including Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Mike Brown, and Amir Brooks. 95 min. Opening Reception | Michael Zelehoski's Surface Tension: Site-Specific Installation

In this site specific installation Zelehoski explores the relationship between mind and reality by deconstructing and recontextualizing found objects into two and three-dimensional space. Zelehoski divides the gallery with a large-scale immersive structure that requires the viewer to traverse a constructed reality that is seemingly ready to collapse at any moment. The works in Surface Tension oscillate between loosely abstract and tautly symmetrical, utilizing steel cable, structural pipe and even fluorescent light as graphic tools. The result is contradictory in nature, representing the immutability of the physical world and the uncertainty of our perception of it.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: The Green

Written by Owen Thompson. At the bitter end of the Vietnam War, the very last American soldiers restlessly wait for the fall of Saigon. But two of them share a dangerous secret and will do almost anything to get out of the pressure-cooker of a city before it is taken. A story of wartime passion, intrigue, and betrayal, The Green asks us to consider just how far we would go for love.
