Concert | Holiday Harmony: An Afternoon of Chamber Music for Two Celli and One Guitar

Performers from the Juilliard School of music: Cello and guitar trio Khari Joyner, Cello; Hut Wonwechtwiwat, Cello; Tengyue Zhang, Guitar. Celebrate the season with The Juilliard School as they return to turn up the holiday cheer. Get into the spirit, step out of the cold, and enjoy an afternoon of lively classical music sure to energize and inspire. Heralded by the Atlanta Journal Constitution as “one of the most promising cellists in the country”, Khari Joyner has made numerous achievements nationally and abroad as a versatile soloist, chamber musician, and ambassador for the arts. He has collaborated with artists such as Magnus Lindberg and Hubert Laws, and has had numerous solo engagements with the Atlanta, Buffalo, New World, New Jersey, and Sphinx Symphonies. Other accomplishments include being awarded the William Schuman Prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music at Juilliard’s 109th Commencement ceremony, winning first prizes in the Juilliard Concerto Competition and Sphinx Competition, and giving a private performance in the Oval Office for President Obama. This particular program will feature a variety of works, and of different stylistic periods, for both Cello and guitar, as well as two cellos. Some of the pieces, such as the de Falla Suite Populaire are more Spanish influenced, while others are more from a general Classical tradition, but feature a variety of virtuosity and brilliance. The program also includes a nice selection that guitarist TY Zhang composed himself, for cello and guitar. To finish off the program, there are some nice holiday selections that will be popular among many, and very recognizable.

Lecture | The Lenox Library: The Library as Museum

One of The New York Public Library’s founding donors was the little known James Lenox (1800-1880). His exceptional assemblage of rare books, prints, maps, and incunabula, which today form the heart of NYPL’s research holdings, were displayed, along with his paintings, sculptures and objects d’art, in the purpose-built Lenox Library (1877). A combined library and art gallery, the library was a gift from Lenox to the citizens of New York designed by one of the nation’s leading architects, Richard Morris Hunt. The Lenox Library graced upper Fifth Avenue until 1911 when it was demolished to make room for Henry C. Frick’s mansion, later the Frick Collection. Through the use of archival photographs, sketches, reproductions of paintings, and prints, this lecture will illuminate Hunt’s design and the display of books and art at the Lenox Library. By bringing to light this extraordinary multi-purpose building, one of the first in the city and in the nation to be both a research library and art gallery, it is hoped that James Lenox’s contribution can be better regarded and more fully valued. Lecturer Sally Webster is Professor Emerita of American Art at Lehman College and the Graduate Center, CUNY.

Film | A Celebration of Bertolt Brecht’s Love Poems

In a stunning 1956 New Yorker piece, Hannah Arendt declared that Brecht “staked his life and art as few poets have ever done.” For this evening, writer and director Tony Kushner, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Angels in America and a National Medal of the Arts Award by President Obama, gathers actors for a riveting performance of the Brecht's love poems, representing work between 1918 and 1955 that often scandalized the German reading public with the force of Eros. Like Goethe, Brecht was always in love with various women, and as his daughter, Barbara Brecht-Schall, who will be present, writes in her preface to the collection this evening celebrates, “he was faithful to each of them.” Presented by the Poetry Society of America.

Lecture | From Chios to 125th Street: Toward a Black Odysseus

By painting a black Odyssey, Romare Bearden connected the desire of African American people to return home with Homers epic. In Bearden's art, the Odyssey is linked to the Freedom Riders, the Underground Railroad, Marcus Garvey's steamship line, and Rosa Parks on a Mobile bus. To ground a black Odyssey within larger cinematic traditions, you'll watch scenes from Godard's Le mpris (Contempt) (1963), in which a director seeks to make a film of the Odyssey, Joseph Stricks Ulysses (1967), based on James Joyces novel, and of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Concert | Singer-Songwriter Wesley Stace with Strings

Formerly known by his stage name John Wesley Harding, under which he performed and recorded for the past 25 years, Wesley Stace chose to step out from behind his well-established pseudonym for the album Self-Titled in honor of the increasingly personal nature of his new material. Since his critically acclaimed 1988 debut It Happened One Night, he has recorded 19 records for both major (Sire, Hollywood) and independent (Mammoth, Rhino, Appleseed, Yep Roc) labels alike.
