Lecture | Digging Dutch New Amsterdam: What Archaeologists Have Discovered about the Lives of Africans, Europeans, and Natives in Early New York

Join archaeologists Anne-Marie Cantwell and Diana diZerega Wall for a discussion on how excavations are shedding new light on the lives of Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans in 17th-century New Amsterdam. During this dramatic time in New York’s history, people from three very different continents encountered each other for the first time. Many of the city’s seemingly humble artifacts, such as pieces of animal bone, shell, nails, broken tiles, and pots and plates, reveal how these people adjusted to new cultural and physical environments while retaining strong continuities with their traditional pasts.

Author Reading | Manjari Chatterjee Miller discusses her book Wronged by Empire: Post-Imperial Ideology and Foreign Policy in India and China

Although India and China have very different experiences of colonialism, they respond to that history in a similar way - by treating it as a collective trauma. As a result, they have a strong sense of victimization that affects their foreign policy decisions even today. Miller uses the colonial past of India and China to explain some of their puzzling foreign policy choices including the Sino-Indian border conflict, India's 1998 nuclear tests and China's opposition to Japan in the UN Security Council. She argues that analyzing how these two countries perceive their colonial past is key to understanding their present.

Opening Reception | Relational Ground: Defying the Status Quo, an Annual Members' Exhibition

Artist members' annual group exhibition is a celebration of varying creative practices, and an exploration into the conversations that develop when the resulting works inhabit a common space. Relational Ground deconstructs the latent value of a show title while highlighting its potential unrestrictive nature. The title, ironically and spontaneously selected through an online "random exhibition title generator," was embraced as a means to avoid suppressing content into thematic structure. Pushing the boundaries of language systems and perceptual experience, the exhibition denies spectators the ability to draw any steadfast conclusions, instead giving weight to their agency in interpreting the works on view.

Screening | Beyond Kovacs: The Edie Adams Television Shows

Perhaps best known as the Muriel Cigar girl ("Why don't you pick one up and smoke it sometime?"), Edie Adams was a Tony Award-winning actress (for her performance as Daisy Mae in “L’il Abner”) and appeared in classic films such as The Apartment, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Love With The Proper Stranger. She was also a film preservationist, saving the Ernie Kovacs (and Edie Adams) library from extinction. Ben Model, curator and co-producer of the new DVD set, Here's Edie: The Edie Adams Televison Collection, will host an overview of her career on television, illustrated by excerpts from "Here's Edie" – which brought her an Emmy nomination - and "The Edie Adams Show," both of which aired from 1962 to 1964 and will be seen for the first time in ANY format since originally broadcast. Author Reading | Book Launch: The Democratic Surround: Multimedia and American Liberalism from World War II to the Psychedelic Sixties

A discussion with Fred Turner and Clay Shirky on Turner’s new book, in which he reveals that the decades that brought us the Korean War and communist witch hunts also witnessed an extraordinary turn toward explicitly democratic, open, and inclusive ideas of communication and with them new, flexible models of social order. Surprisingly, he shows that it was this turn that brought us the revolutionary multimedia and the wild-eyed individualism of the 1960s counterculture.
