Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

New York City is a mecca for graffiti and street art, making it a very attractive playground for artists from around the world. Bushwick, in a working class district on the north side of Brooklyn adjacent to Williamsburg, has been attracting artists for some time now. Joseph Guillermo Jones II is undoubtedly one of the hardest working people in hip-hop. Better known as Jim Jones, this Bronx-born, Harlem-bred star has never stopped hustling since his 2004 release On My Way to Church (a reference to his days coming up in uptown New York). The hometown hero of Puerto Rican and Aruban descent would crank out another hit-maker the following year, Harlem: Diary of a Summer. Just one short year later, he dropped the album Hustler’s P.O.M.E. (Product Of My Environment), which supplied “We Fly High,” a platinum-certified #5 smash. It was at this time that the industrious Jones also formed the band ByrdGand (and label of the same name), as they promptly released M.O.B.: The Album. Subsequent records would produce the undisputed hits “Pop Champagne” and “Perfect Day.” Utilizing his innate business savviness, Jones has successfully branded himself for television purposes, forged a clothing line (Vampire Life – to accompany his latest series of popular tracks), and even cultivated a beverage.

Established by Battery Dance in 1982 as the Downtown Dance Festival, today the Battery Dance Festival is New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival. Audiences are traditionally drawn from the large downtown working population and residents, families, tourists, senior citizens and dance fans from the greater NYC metropolitan area. Each year, the Festival draws a combined audience of over 12,000 people. The Battery Dance Festival provides a unique opportunity for outstanding dancers and choreographers to present original works of high artistic merit in a free public forum. BDF revels in the panoply of dance that our city offers, with strong emphasis on the inclusion of diverse dance styles and an international roster of performers. American choreographers such as Michelle Dorrance, Paul Taylor, Mary Anthony, Elizabeth Streb and Darrell Moultrie have all presented their works alongside pre-eminent companies from Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and the Caribbean.

Director Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished – a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words. He draws upon James Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America.
