It is here, as much as anywhere, where American history started. It's where the first US Congress assembled and produced the Bill of Rights and where President George Washington took his first oath of office. It's here where the world's most important stock exchange and one of the most famous bridges stand. And it is here where an unspeakable tragedy took place and where a rebirth is underway.

Although world famous, Harlem may be New York's best kept secret with some of the city's best architecture, food, music and people. Harlem's history is also one of the city's most dramatic, having gone through many ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic changes over the past roughly 400 years, which have resulted in a diverse array of places of worship, theaters, homes and eating establishments.

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Dance Performance |
Established by Battery Dance in 1982 as the Downtown Dance Festival, today the Battery Dance Festival is New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival. Audiences are traditionally drawn from the large downtown working population and residents, families, tourists, senior citizens and dance fans from the greater NYC metropolitan area. Each year, the Festival draws a combined audience of over 12,000 people. The Battery Dance Festival provides a unique opportunity for outstanding dancers and choreographers to present original works of high artistic merit in a free public forum. BDF revels in the panoply of dance that our city offers, with strong emphasis on the inclusion of diverse dance styles and an international roster of performers. American choreographers such as Michelle Dorrance, Paul Taylor, Mary Anthony, Elizabeth Streb and Darrell Moultrie have all presented their works alongside pre-eminent companies from Asia, Europe, South America, Africa and the Caribbean.

Javier Sethness Castro presents an updated biography of the world-renowned critical theorist Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979). Investigating the development of Marcuse’s dialectical approach vis-à-vis Hegel, Marx, Fourier, Heidegger, Freud, and the Frankfurt School figures, the author chronicles Marcuse’s activism in favor of anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, and anti-authoritarianism together with the philosopher’s revindication of global libertarian-socialist revolution. The author will also contemplate Marcuse’s relevance to contemporary struggle with regard to ecology, feminism, and anarchism.

More Art premieres NYsferatu: Symphony of a Century by Andrea Mastrovito, a spectacular, hand-animated, silent film that combines music and community engagement to create a powerful and poignant statement about the horrors of the unknown and the inspiring search for liberty.Resetting Friedrich W. Murnau’s classic 1922 film Nosferatu in contemporary New York City, Mastrovito and his team of 12 artists have created over 35,000 original drawings to replicate the beautifully eerie flickering shutter effect of early cinema. The reimagined storyline and title-cards of NYsferatu were made in collaboration with recent immigrants and English as new language learners. The film is accompanied by musical improvisations by The Dick Valentine Vampyre Jamboree featuring Dick Valentine of Electric Six and James Wells and Quinn English of The Gay Blades. Free popcorn.
