Concert | Americanafest 2016: Those Pretty Wrongs / Mary Gauthier / Kelly Jones and Teddy Thompson

Melody and narrative are the ties that bind this afternoon program. With a name plucked from a Shakespeare sonnet, Those Pretty Wrongs—comprising Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Luther Russell (The Freewheelers)—craft sun-dappled songs, in which poetry and harmonies soar over acoustic soundscapes. Equipped with “unflinching introspection and Southern Gothic–shaded storytelling” (NPR Music), celebrated singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier excavates poignant songs from a bittersweet life. With their bright, side-by-side harmonies, power pop songstress Kelly Jones and Teddy Thompson (son of British folk-rock icons Richard and Linda Thompson) strike a vintage boy-girl Everlys vibe. Their original songs run the gamut from heartbreaking country ballads to lively rockabilly tunes.

Concert | Brazilian Sounds: Monobloco / Cabruêra / Boogarins

Acclaimed for incorporating diverse rhythms and styles into the samba beat, Monobloco was created in 2000 by C.A. Ferrari, Celso Alvim, Mário Moura, Pedro Luís and Sidon Silva as a result of a percussion workshop. Nowadays, the group performs in a yearly parade that closes the carnival festivities and is followed through the streets of Rio de Janeiro by half a million people. Cabruêra is a band showing the other side of Brazil’s rich music scene beyond Bossa and Samba. Based in the dry and barren region of Northeast Brazil, Cabruêra spices up the rural rhythms with all the urban styles you love to groove to. Considered as the “…coolest underground group in that crazy wonderful country.” this band is a journey to an undiscovered music continent. Boogarins’ Fernando “Dino” Almeida and Benke Ferraz began playing music together as teenagers in the central Brazilian city of Goiânia – creating psychedelic pop in their parents’ gardens, filtering their country’s rich musical history through a very modern lens. By the time the group’s home-recorded debut LP, As Plantas Que Curam, was released in late 2013, the band had recruited a proper rhythm section and were developing a name around Goiânia.

Play | Hudson Warehouse presents Shakespeare's Othello

Shakespeare's tragedy, believed to have been written in 1603. It is based on the story "A Moorish Captain" by Cinthio, first published in 1565. This tightly constructed work revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his beloved wife, Desdemona; his loyal lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted but ultimately unfaithful ensign, Iago. Given its varied and enduring themes of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal, revenge and repentance, Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatre alike, and has been the source for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations. Takes place Thursdays thru Sundays, July 28-August 21.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Park: Troilus and Cressida

Tony-winning director Daniel Sullivan returns with one of the Bard’s most rarely produced plays, Troilus and Cressida. Both warriors and lovers play hard to get in this surprisingly modern epic about the hot blood, hot thoughts and hot deeds of the ancient Greeks. In the 7th year of the Trojan War, Troilus, a young prince, pines for the affections of Cressida, a bright young woman who knows how to play it cool. Meanwhile, the heroes of the Iliad – Ajax, Ulysses, Achilles and the kings they serve - debate whether to return the dangerously beautiful captive Helen or continue to fight without end.
