Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: 44 Daughters Collection by Sam Montgomery

Sam Montgomery's outsider artwork ranges from handmade dolls to pottery and three-dimensional art made from found objects. This project began when he was a student at a music academy when he made 44 dolls that lived in his dorm room. The dolls represent what it is to be special and unique. They are all the same, but different, and should be celebrated for who they are and not be judged for how they are different. The Collection has now grown from 44 Daughters to include Sons, Cancer Survivors, Wounded Warriors, and Hearts. Every doll is loveingly handmade. He draws the patterns for the Dolls, stitches them all by hand, stuffs them, and creates their faces with buttons from his grandmother's buttom box and hair from yarn. Each Doll is tagged and numbered to show that it's an original in the artist's series. No two dolls are alike.

Tour | High Line Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park.

Dance Performance | Mister Mantis by Donna Ahmadi: The Dance of the Praying Mantis

This project explores the rich symbolism of the praying mantis in Western art and popular culture. Both an icon of gender reversal and of predatory prowess, the mantis fascinates with its lithe form, stilted grace, and oddly dignified cannibalism. Dali painted his muse with arms and hands folded--a classic gesture of the mantis and comment on the complex power relationships between them. Mantis style kung fu adopts the iconic wobble and reach of the majestic insect, its katas often expanding upon delicate movements of the wrist and hand. This project draws on both the martial and the marital, offering an intimate window into the sexual politics of a mantis "couple" and their dialogue of death, sacrifice, and renewal. Dancer Otis Cook will perform the male mantis and dancer Donna Ahmadi will perform female mantis. Barry Weil created mantis masks and moth, and visual artist Jennifer O'Flaherty painted and constructed habitat plants.
