Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Screening | Brazilian Film Festival of New York

Baby Do Brasil - Baby Do Brasil is considered one of the biggest Brazilian singers, and a music legend who has been revolutionizing the history of the Popular Brazilian Music (MPB). Baby is famous for her soft, indescribable and unique voice, and strong rhythmic versatility not only in her ballads but also in her electric songs. She began her career along with Moraes Moreira, Galvão, Paulinho Boca de Cantor and Pepeu Gomes, creating the Novos Baianos group. The band formed in 1970, and quickly reached national media, including being named as the best album of Brazilian music of all times by Rolling Stones. Samba and Jazz - Directed by Jefferson Mello, author of the book “Paths of Jazz,” this feature length documentary intends to draw a parallel between Jazz and Samba, showing in a versatile and unpretentious way the synergy between these two rhythms and the cities in which they are most present: Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans, respectively. Samba & Jazz portrays, through unusual situations, the authentic artistic expression of distant peoples, but with a feeling in common: a passion for music.

Dance Performance | Dance Artists: Tinder and Ash / Ephrat Asherie Dance / Kiebpoli and Shine / Claire Parsons Co. / Brooklyn United Marching Band

Tinder and Ash - Hailing from every corner of the U.S., five circus artists found themselves in the same place (the New England Center for Circus Arts) with the same vision (to create a show about personal loss and transformation using the virtuosity of circus and the artistry of theater). Through a residency with the circus-mecca TOHU in Montreal, these five diverse yet kindred-spirit artists created Tinder & Ash, a highly physical journey of losing and finding themselves and each other. Ephrat Asherie Dance - Founded in 2012, Ephrat Asherie Dance has had their work presented at the Apollo Theater, the Ahmanson Theater, Jacob’s Pillow, New York Live Arts and Dixon Place, among other venues. Artistic Director, Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie is a NYFA artist and has received various grants and awards to support her work including a Mondo Cane! commission from Dixon Place, a Swing Space and Workspace residency from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and a Travel and Study grant from the Jerome Foundation. Kiebpoli and Shine - Kiebpoli Calnek (Kiebpoli) and Shawana Kemp (Shine) attended the High School for the performing Arts here in New York City. They are collaborating for the first time with this piece that will expand into a full production. They have come together to create a collage of sound and movement. Kiebpoli Calnek is an actress and aerialist. She is a graduate of CCNY, a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab, and of the Actors’ Equity Association. Her works have received generous funding and support from Elizabeth Streb, Astrea Foundation, Asian Arts Initiative, and The New York Foundation for the Arts. Kiebpoli is also founder and artistic director of Black*Acrobat, a social enterprise that seeks to empower fringe communities through the vertical world of aerial acrobatics with devised theatrical performances. Claire Parsons Co. - Marmalade is a dance and circus production by Swedish company Claire Parsons Co. Aimed at young children 2-6 years old, Marmalade is a delicious, sensory performance about meeting, mixing and blending. Mira and Viktor taste and feel in poetic movements and circus actions in an exquisite and visual experience where the audience is invited to join. Brooklyn United Marching Band - The Brooklyn United Marching Band is a community-based organization that serves New York City youth. As an art form, marching band combines the elements of musicianship and pageantry and allows each student to participate in an all-encompassing and life changing activity. Brooklyn United is focused on the development of youth through Academic Support, Character Development, Skills Building and Performance Opportunities. It is through these pillars that they strive to build strong, well rounded, healthy, confident and capable young people.

Theater | Shakespeare in the Parking Lot: Macbeth

The Drilling Company's Shakespeare in the Parking Lot became a treasured urban tradition in two decades of productions. The concept of free Shakespeare in a parking lot, presented with a "poor theater" aesthetic, is now widely imitated around the US and around the world, with productions as far away as New Zealand. Set in Scotland, Macbeth dramatizes the corrosive psychological and political effects produced when evil is chosen as a way to fulfill the ambition for power.

Dance Performance | Mister Mantis by Donna Ahmadi: The Dance of the Praying Mantis

This project explores the rich symbolism of the praying mantis in Western art and popular culture. Both an icon of gender reversal and of predatory prowess, the mantis fascinates with its lithe form, stilted grace, and oddly dignified cannibalism. Dali painted his muse with arms and hands folded--a classic gesture of the mantis and comment on the complex power relationships between them. Mantis style kung fu adopts the iconic wobble and reach of the majestic insect, its katas often expanding upon delicate movements of the wrist and hand. This project draws on both the martial and the marital, offering an intimate window into the sexual politics of a mantis "couple" and their dialogue of death, sacrifice, and renewal. Dancer Otis Cook will perform the male mantis and dancer Donna Ahmadi will perform female mantis. Barry Weil created mantis masks and moth, and visual artist Jennifer O'Flaherty painted and constructed habitat plants.
