One of the oldest free weekly events in Manhattan is Dixieland Jazz with the Gotham Jazzmen, which happen at noon every Tuesday. Another example of an event that you can attend all year round on weekdays is Federal Reserve Bank Tour, which takes place every week day at 1 pm (but advanced reservations are required). You can take at least 13 free tours every day of the year, except the New Year Day, July 4th, and the Christmas Day. If you are classical music afficionado, you can spend whole day in New York going from one free classical concert to another. If you love theater, then New York gives you an option to attend plays and musicals free of charge, or at deep discount. You just need to have information about it. Frank Bidart is the author of Metaphysical Dog (FSG, 2013), Watching the Spring Festival (FSG, 2008), Star Dust (FSG, 2005), Desire (FSG, 1997), and In the Western Night: Collected Poems 1965-90 (FSG, 1990). He has won many prizes, including the Wallace Stevens Award, the 2007 Bollingen Prize for American Poetry, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He teaches at Wellesley College and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Concert | The Vocal Music of Viktor Ullmann, a Jewish Composer Murdered at Auschwitz


The Ullmann Project celebrates the vocal music of Viktor Ullmann, an Austrian composer of Jewish descent, who was interned in Theresienstadt and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. Presented together with works by Ullmann’s mentor Alexander von Zemlinsky and his contemporary Erich Wolfgang Korngold, two composers who fled to the United States from the Nazis, The Ullmann Project also highlights works by Petr Eben, a Czech composer and Buchenwald survivor. Devised and directed by soprano and vocal pedagogue Dominique Hellsten, the concert will feature performances by Swedish organist and musicologist Johannes Landgren, an internationally distinguished authority on the works of Petr Eben.
