Discussion | Mall City/Subway City: Hong Kong and New York's Consumer Landscapes

Hyper-dense projects in Manhattan, such as the Westfield World Trade Center/Brookfield Place/Fulton Center complex and the Hudson Yard/Highline nexus will bring the Asian vertical mall to New York — a city that up until now has shunned this type of development. What will this mean for New York City and its love of the subway and the street? This panel will explore the consequences of these new developments and raise questions about cultural identity, architecture and urban life in the hyper dense socially mediated global city. It will compare new developments in New York with interlinked vertical mall complexes in Hong Kong, where they seamlessly connect to public transportation systems and feature spectacular atriums, plazas, yet set in stone a culture of leisure, tourism and consumerism.

Opening Reception | Mixed Media Works: Jae Yong Kim's Pop Goes the Donut

Akin to Pop artists before him, Jae Yong Kim's work elicits an immediate visceral response. In this case, "DONUTS!" His motif is instantly recognizable and the viewer can't subdue their immediate hankering for these sculptures. Concurrently, a parallel effect also takes hold of the viewer. Similar to being in a donut shop, a synesthesia effect causes each color to render a flavor and a sweet and/or savory dream starts to unfold.

Lecture | Planet Cuba: Art, Culture, Future Island

Cuba has been in a state of massive transformation over the past decade, with its historic resumption of diplomatic relations with the United States only the latest development. While the political leadership has changed direction, other forces have taken hold. The environment is under threat, and the culture feels the strain of new forms of consumption. Planet Cuba examines how art and literature have responded to a new moment, one both more globalized and less exceptional; more concerned with local quotidian worries than international alliances; more threatened by the depredations of planetary capitalism and climate change than by the vagaries of the nation’s government. Rachel Price, Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Princeton University, examines a fascinating array of artists and writers who are tracing a new socio-cultural map of the island. She holds a PhD from Duke University and writes on Latin American literature, media, and ecocriticism.
