Discussion | Women’s Pay Equity Day: Getting Even

It is well known that women in the United States are paid, on average, 77 cents for every dollar that a man earns. Sometimes, this is a result of women getting paid less for the same work. In other cases, women are under-represented in higher-earning positions or take different career paths due to family responsibilities. The wage gap varies among women and is larger for women of color and women in particular sectors and occupations. This event explores the gap between men’s and women’s wages. This day was established in 1996 by the National Committee on Pay Equity to symbolize how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year.

Tour | Tour of Gracie Mansion, Home of New York's Mayors

In 1799, a prosperous New York merchant named Archibald Gracie built a country house overlooking a bend in the East River, five miles north of the then-New York City limits. Little did he know that, more than 200 years later, his home would be serving as the official residence of the First Family of New York City - a place where history is made, not merely recorded. As a historic house museum run by the Parks Department, sitting on 11 acres of grounds now known as Carl Schurz Park, Gracie Mansion has served as the home of 10 mayors, beginning first with Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia in 1942. Today, Gracie Mansion is occupied by the de Blasio family, which has opened its doors in the spirit of the administration's motto: one city, rising together. In keeping with that theme, Mayor de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray have introduced a new art installation, titled “Windows on the City: Looking Out at Gracie’s New York.” ,br> Tours take place every Tuesday at 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3pm.

Author Reading | Paul Auerbach discusses his book Socialist Optimism

Dr. Paul Auerbach obtained a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin in 1973 and since 1990 he has been Reader in Economics at Kingston University. Auerbach argues that the traditional emphasis in socialist thought on state ownership of the means of production and central planning was based on a misreading of history (the history of capitalism) and that it was a serious mistake. Instead, a socialist strategy should focus on education and aim for social equality in the upbringing of children.

Lecture | Aeroplanes and Deportation

There can be no expulsion without the trains, planes, buses and ships that states use to transport deportees across borders and territories. There can be no deportation without an assortment of guards, pilots, doctors, human rights observers and other experts charged with overseeing these involuntary journeys. Yet curiously, the actual mechanisms of moving, escorting and expressing the deportee have been largely overlooked in studies of contemporary deportation. In this presentation William Walters calls for studies of migration, borders and deportation to bring the authorities, practices and infrastructures of transportation more fully into the research frame. He focuses on one particular modality of deportation: removing people by aircraft.

Both writers will examine the strong and lasting impression that Colette’s work has had on their own.
