Lecture | Law, Rights and Religion: First, Do No Harm

"First, Do No Harm" is a responsibility that flows in one direction - from physician to patient. A physician must take the patient's well-being into consideration when determining his or her treatment plan. A physician must honor the patient's request about what treatment he or she desires. Yet some disagree, most notably those who believe that patients have an obligation to accommodate their doctor or hospital's religious beliefs even when the patient will suffer. Apparently, their mantra reads "Do No Harm Except When My Religion Says So." This line of thinking predominates in Catholic Hospitals, which now operate one out of six hospital beds in the country. Each day, hundreds of thousands of individuals are patients at these hospitals and have no idea that their treatment plan is being governed by religious doctrine, rather than medical standards. A talk by Brooke A. Tucker of the ACLU Michigan.

Discussion | Media Dark, Media Bright: Urbanity and Political Imagination

Every city is the site of radical disconnections between classes, neighborhoods, interest groups and political factions. Radical economic inequality is the most visible of these disconnections. How media project and transform these disconnections; how the latter are woven back into social processes, and with what implications for social justice, are questions of the greatest interest for media studies.

Lecture | The Political Economy of Time and ‘Work-Life Conflict’

So far, capital has been resistant to the regulation of time. Rather than balance the demands of work and life, US capitalism was dependent on the hidden subsidy of the American wife, a behind-the-scenes, stay-at-home fixer of what economists call market failures. When women left the home—out of desire and necessity—the old system fell apart. Families and the larger economy have yet to recover, and employers' demands for more of their employees’ time is a growing reality in US capitalism. Economist Heather Boushey, an outside advisor to the Hillary Clinton campaign, delivers the lecture.

This spring marks the 70th anniversary of Camus’s one and only trip to the United States. Outside of intellectual and literary circles, the young author was scarcely known when he arrived. But he would be. During the course of his visit, his novel The Stranger was published in English for the first time. With: Alice Kaplan (John M. Musser Professor of French, and Chair of the French Department, Yale University), Alban Cerisier (Secretary-General at Editions Gallimard, Camus’ French publisher) and Morris Dickstein (Distinguished Professor of English, CUNY, Graduate Center).
