Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Lecture | Serbia's Transition: Challenges for Policymakers

Serbia is one of the countries that has emerged from the disintegration of Socialist Yugoslavia in 1991. Its transition to a market economy has been particularly difficult due to adverse political and economic conditions that prevailed in the 1990s. Bold economic reforms started being implemented primarily after the political changes in late 2000. The lecture will discuss Serbia's difficult twenty-five years of transition to a market economy, explaining why a country that had among the best starting conditions in 1989 ended up lagging so much behind. Speaker Milica Uvalic is a Professor at the Department of Economics, Finance and Statistics of the University of Perugia (Italy). Formerly she was member of the UN Committee for Development Policy, nominated for two terms (2008-2012), Public Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Centre in Washington DC (2009) and Vice-Minister in the Federal government of FR Yugoslavia (2001).

Featuring four artists from the exhibition and moderated by its curator Alexandra Schwartz, the panel examines the insights achieved by, and challenges inherent in, creating a history of a relatively recent era, many of whose key issues—surrounding identities, digital technologies, and globalization—remain urgent today.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Mariella Bisson: Sunlight, Water and Gravity

Mariella Bisson’s large-scale, mixed media paintings of picturesque waterfalls in upstate New York are coupled with her preparatory drawings and watercolors. Her paintings, created with hundreds of pieces of layered paper, teeter on the edge of abstraction and representation. The overlapping paper replicates the texture of rushing water and rock strata. Motion, gravity, and the endlessness of geological time are as much the subject of Bisson’s paintings as the actual waterfalls.

Talk | On the Rights of Muslim Migrants: Indian Missionaries in West Africa Since the 1920s

From the 1920s, Muslims in British India promoted an active missionary agenda. Seeking political recognition as well as an antidote to Hindu conversion campaigns, the heterodox Muslim sect, the Ahmadiyya, had a vision of global evangelism in which Western and Sudanic Africa figured centrally. Its members argued that Muslims had a right to migrate for the purpose of evangelism and, to support this, they drew on the history of cosmopolitanism and non-racial egalitarianism in Islamic networks in earlier centuries, citing specifically the African settlement in Mughal, India. In this way, West Africa became a prime area of Ahmadiyya conversion, the appeal of the sect coming in part from the protection to migrate in the era of late empire and independent nation-state building. Lecturer Shobana Shankar is assistant professor of history at SUNY Stony Brook. Her book, Who Shall Enter Paradise? Christian Origins in Muslim Northern Nigeria, c.1890-1975, was published in 2014 in the Ohio University Press’ New African Histories Series.

Discussion | Affordable Housing: Rent and Reality

Mayor de Blasio’s ambitious affordable housing agenda is at the heart of his administration’s pledge to start a new chapter in “a tale of two cities.” In 2015, Albany serves as the rent-regulation battleground but the true impact of this fight will be felt in the five boroughs where more than 2.3 million people live in rent-regulated housing. While proposals to construct new affordable housing continue to garner the most media attention, the mayor’s State of the City address revealed just how dependent his strategy is on preserving the affordability of existing units. What does the battle over rent regulation in the state capital portend for turning de Blasio’s vision into reality? Join a forum with leading officials, experts, and practitioners who will shed light on this question and more. Speakers to be announced.

Discussion | The Stories of Ruins

The chipping paint, peeling wallpaper, and threadbare linoleum floors of 97 Orchard are more than relics of long ago. They are evocative of life lived and illuminate the stories and events of the past. In an appreciation of ruins, Andrew Dolkart, director of Columbia’s historic preservation program, Katherine Malone-France, of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Christopher Payne, photographer of North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place in New York City, and Marisa Scheinfeld, who documented abandoned resorts of the Borscht Belt in the Catskills, gather to discuss the significance of these spaces.

Performance | The Riff Comedy Show

Lineup: Jake Hart, Ajai Raj, Justin Watts, Ben Conrad, Eagle Witt, Joseph Robert, David Piccolomini, Rachel Joan, Vince Chang, Jonezy Ankarcrona. The idea here is to have standup comedians do an entire show where they only riff instead of doing their material. To do this, each comedian will take the stage and then invite the audience to shout out topics they'd like to hear jokes about, and then the comedian will riff for their entertainment. Plus, in between each comic, we'll have even more funny people take the stage to play outrageous party or improvisation games. The whole night will be completely unplanned and undoubtedly fun.
