Colloquium | Assuming Boycott: Resistance, Agency, and Cultural Production

Boycott as a political and cultural strategy has rarely been more prominent than in our current moment. From art institutions and universities to cities and entire countries, many have been affected by positions that pose as "withdrawal" or "disengagement" and in fact often result in various actions and pointed engagement around a specific issue or question. This colloquium is the culmination of a yearlong cycle of seminars and programs on cultural and academic boycotts as special conditions for discourse and art making starting in spring 2014. The seminars addressed timely questions of the agency of artists in the social and political sphere, and how culture can enact and perform change within a politics of disengagement.

Dance Performance | Dance Works-in-Progress

Curated by Ishmael Houston-Jones, the DraftWork series hosts informal Saturday afternoon performances that offer choreographers an opportunity to show their work in various stages of development. Performances are followed by discussion and a reception during which artists and audiences share perspectives about the works-in-progress. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Stefanie Batten Bland creates work that investigates the human condition and explores our relationship with the natural world. Her works are physically and technically demanding in dance—and are poetic emotionally-driven creations. Each piece is a futuristic environment, encompassing a strong installation and theatrical flavor that immerses performer and spectator and subject in a unique performative experience. Ayo Janeen Jackson received her BFA at North Carolina School of the Arts. She is a former member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Ballet Preljocaj, and the original cast of Spider-Man on Broadway. Her choreography has been presented in New York venues such as PS122, Harlem Stage, and DTW.

Gallery Talk | Artist Talk: Barbara Yoshida

In 2003, fine art photographer Barbara Yoshida pitched a tent next to a circle of tall standing stones called the Ring of Brodgar in the Orkney Islands in Scotland (pictured above). Using a 4 x 5 film camera, she photographed the stones from evening to dawn, bathed in moonlight. This experience inspired her to embark on a project to photograph lesser-known stones that were built before Stonehenge. Over the next ten years, she traveled to fifteen countries and three continents to photograph ritual stones, many never documented on film until now. Her exquisite, elegant images of the stones are being shown in a solo exhibition.
