Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Lecture | Child Prodigies and the Performance of Genius: From Pascal to Minou Drouet

Ann Jefferson will discuss her recent work on genius in France. Child prodigies are a recurrent feature of the literature on genius, which records the many occasions on which the exceptional talents of children have been held up for exhibition. When the prodigy is incited to become a performer, the effect is both to confirm and to question the assumptions we hold about the nature of genius itself. Ann Jefferson is professor of French literature at the University of Oxford and fellow and tutor in French at New College, Oxford. Her books include Reading Realism in Stendhal and Biography and the Question of Literature in France and most recently, Genius in France: An Idea and its Uses.

The skeletal remains of the High Line’s elevated tracks set the perfect scene for a spooky evening. Join a journey to the creepier side of New York City’s most unique park. If the moon hangs right perhaps you’ll witness the spectacle of a ghostly ship floating down the Hudson River; is it the long forgotten crew of Henry Hudson’s Half-Moon warning sailors not to go to sea? Or is it Captain Kidd protecting the treasure he buried on Liberty Island? Venture at your own risk through the dark side of High Line.

Lecture | How the Voice Did Not Sing On: Figures of Music in German Modernist Poetry

A lecture by Axel Englund, Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University. To what extent could the idea of poetic musicality retain its validity in the 20th century? Examples from Rilke, Celan and Sachs show that it was still crucial, but above all as an arena for the playing out of acute conflicts: between sound and silence, between remembrance and forgetfulness, and between transcendent spirit and palpable body.
