Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Installation: Anton Alvarez's Wrapsody

The Chilean-Swedish designer constructed The Thread-Wrapping Machine as his tool and medium. Used like a DIY sewing machine with pedal control, the “wrapper” joins a mix of wood, plastic, metal, fur, felt, paint and other materials into bright, exuberant furniture. Glue-coated thread holds the various parts together into a solid structure and provides the joinery. Alvarez does not use any other tools or fasteners. Thread is the artist’s construction and composition, a framework as well as shape, pattern, line, and color. Alvarez will transform the gallery into his studio, using his machine to make new work in the space. Coming in and out as he pleases (during both open and closed gallery hours), Alvarez will produce a variety of furniture pieces – chairs, side tables, benches and lamps – alongside abstract objects and architectural elements including columns, totems and arches in the space. The exhibition will celebrate process, performance and craft, as well as design objects with and without “function.”

Book Signing | Robin Givhan discusses her book The Battle of Versailles: The Night American Fashion Stumbled Into the Spotlight and Made History

Robin Givhan, Pulitzer Prize–winning fashion critic for the Washington Post, presents her first book, the story of a 1973 face-off between five American designers — including Halston and Oscar de la Renta — and five French designers (Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin among them). Buoyed by a decision to use ten African American models (unheard of then), the underdog Yanks pulled off a victory, cementing American fashion as a major player on the international stage. A book signing will follow the presentation.
