Symposium | The New Existentialism

During the past decade and a half, New York has seemed a unique laboratory for paradigmatic shifts in society, providing a locus for crises in financial and economic structure, political organization, and climatic patterns. And yet the circumstances unfolding in all these spheres have prompted a sense of insecurity that pervades not only the old centers of the occidental world but also territories beyond. In an effort to reframe (and de-privilege) humanity’s place in this radically altered world environment, a number of increasingly prominent voices in contemporary thought have been seeking to instigate a break with historical modes of intellectual engagement stemming from continental philosophy in order to find alternative models that might depart from referential practices, poststructuralism, and even sociological theory. At the same time, such an impulse is shared by an emerging generation of practitioners in art. French and American thinkers and artists—including Emily Apter, Patricia Fulguières, Tristan Garcia, and Patrice Maniglier—will evoke some recent philosophical proposals and link them with related artistic practices.

Performance | Performance Art: Kevin Beasley

Kevin Beasley's work utilizes media including sculpture, photography, sound, and performance to navigate notions of origin. For his performance, Beasley explores an accumulation of sounds gathered from locations with varying relationships to Beasley’s personal history – Virginia, Detroit, Cleveland and New York. Manipulated and mixed, Beasley forces these diverse experiences together into a single context. Recorded onto the reels of his work, ...for this moment, this moment is yours..., they materialize as a new element that contributes to the ever-evolving nature of the work. Beasley is currently an artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem. His work is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Butcher's Daughter, Detroit and his work is on view as part of the 2014 Whitney Biennial, curated by Anthony Elms, Michelle Grabner and Stuart Comer and When the Stars Begin to Fall at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
