Originally intended to bring people of all walks of life together -- a people's park -- Central Park lives up to it's original designs. Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Performance | Shakespeare on Toast

Who’s afraid of William Shakespeare? Just about everyone. He wrote too much and what he wrote is inaccessible and elitist. Right? Wrong. Shakespeare on Toast knocks the stuffing from the staid old myth of Shakespeare, revealing the man and his plays for what they really are: modern, thrilling, uplifting drama. The colorful words and vibrant world of the world’s greatest hack writer are brought brilliantly to life by actor Ben Crystal. Sweeping cobwebs from the Bard – his language, his life, his world - Crystal reveals man and work as relevant, accessible, alive. This Shakespeare is for everyone, whether you’re studying him for the first time or you’ve never set foot near one of his plays, but have always wanted to.

Lecture | On Social Verdicts: Classes, Identities, Trajectories

Society assigns places: it pronounces verdicts and marks us for life. It puts up frontiers and establishes hierarchies between individuals and groups. The role of critical thought is to shed light on these social mechanisms and on the logic of social domination and reproduction. Through an analysis of literary, philosophical and sociological texts, Didier Eribon proposes a new theory of political subjectivity. Speaker Didier Eribon is a professor at the School of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the University of Amiens.

new memoir by writer Janet Mock, Redefining Realness: My Path
to Womanhood, Identity, Love &
So Much More, which relates the author’s experience as a young

Mock, who served as a staff editor for People.com for five years, launched the social media project #GirlsLikeUs which aims to raise

Poetry Reading | Andy Fitch reads from his book Sixty Morning Talks: Serial Interviews with Contemporary Authors

Rather than advance an overarching argument concerning “the state of poetry,” this book engages a broad range of authors often subdivided into ideological, aesthetic, generational, national and identity-based camps, and taps the accessibility of vernacular speech to offer new means of comparative study, cross-reference, and discursive collaboration. Fitch will be joined by Shanna Compton, Thom Donovan, Dorothea Lasky, Tan Lin, Christopher Schmidt, and Jenny Zhang for a series of readings and live conversations.

Talk | Project Y: Public. Art. Outreach

Speaker: Ravi Agarwal. Delhi's Yamuna River is a metaphor of changing times: caught between modernity and tradition, and a site for settlements for hundreds of years, it is now dirty and polluted, yet worshipped, ritualized, and also part of urban plans and investments. The riverbank has turned from a place in the margins where residue and the unwanted were discarded, to a riverfront park in a rapidly globalizing city of over 15 million inhabitants. Project Y: Public. Art. Outreach (2011) was a multi-dimensional public art and outreach project on the river's banks to help raise questions about the future of the river as an ecological space, and also to reconfigure ideas of our relationship to nature. The talk will present the project and the conceptual ideas behind it, as well as its ongoing outcomes.
