Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Discussion | Paula Modersohn-Becker: The First Modern Woman Artist

“The complication of the artist’s being a woman,” mused the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, “ah, that really is a whole new question.” On the anniversary of the publication of Paula Modersohn-Becker: The First Modern Woman Artist by Diane Radycki (Yale University Press, 2013), the author is joined by critic John Colapinto (The New Yorker), scholar Alessandra Comini (National Book Award nominee), author Marie Darrieussecq (2013 Prix Médicis winner), museum director Susanne Gerlach (Böttcherstrasse GmbH/Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum) and artist Grace Graupe-Pillard in a dynamic discussion about the book, and its deliberately provocative sub-title. Is Modersohn-Becker the missing piece in the history of twentieth-century modernism?

Discussion | Crime in Translation

With moderator Shizuka Otake and panelists Annamaria Alfieri, Chris Pavone and Jeffrey Siger. Skip the security line and the jet lag, and travel comfortably by mystery novel. The panelists expertly combine suspense with a foreign setting. One writes crime stories set in Greece, so current they are almost ahead of the headlines. One wrote a novel about nice American families in Luxemburg, right in the heart of Europe. Only, they are keeping some dark secrets, not nice at all. And what does the author have planned for his new book? Travel in both time and space for mysteries about the complex history of South American countries.

Discussion | New Feminist Solutions: A Celebration of Social Justice Approaches to Domestic Violence

Between 2011-2012, Sakhi for South Asian Women convened two meetings of grassroots organizers
 to address the challenges of
building a broader anti-violence movement. These events explored the intersections between
domestic violence and such issues as immigration, transphobia, incarceration, and reproductive justice. While communities of color have always been disproportionately affected by such kinds of violence, they have also often been marginalized by the mainstream anti-domestic violence movement. This latest installment of the New Feminist Solutions series distills the findings of these gatherings and foregrounds stories from communities of color that are responding boldly to domestic violence within a social justice framework. Drawing on narratives from activists and organizations working in marginalized communities, the report demonstrates that movements can be built on the principles of transformation
and justice, rather than on law enforcement and criminalization.
