Jungjin Lee was born in Korea in 1961 and currently lives and works in New York City. Lee’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States, Europe, and Korea. Discussion | Writing Outside the Box

University presses continue to be a key venue for scholars to publish their work, but trade houses are often surprisingly welcoming of books by academics. What circumstances lead authors to turn to publishing for a general readership, and how do editors at such publishing houses think about their relationship with scholarly authors? What books are most successful when this route is pursued, and how do editors and academic authors discover each other? In two panels, a group of distinguished authors and editors discuss aspects of the process, both personal and professional, and provide their own considerations on the relationship of the university and the publishing industry today. This event will be moderated by the Institute’s Director, Eric Banks and Jane Tylus, Professor of Italian Studies. AUTHORS: Joan Breton Connelly; Greg Grandin; Jo Labanyi. EDITORS: Erika Goldman, Bellevue Literary Press; Alex Star, Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Robert Weil Liveright/W.W. Norton.

Lecture | Hopelessly Devoted, or the Feminist Lyre

A lecture by P.A. Skantze, Performance Practices, University of Roehampton, and Visiting Scholar. This lecture, born of Skantze’s project The Flaneur at Her Devotions, makes use of a new methodology Skantze has been experimenting with: lyric theory, questions of gender, wandering, longing, and devotion as “temporal insurgency,” to use Fred Moten’s term. Who is allowed to take their time? Can we be an ethical thorn in the side of the businessification of learning if we insist on being inconvenient, digressing, getting lost?

Lecture | In the Times of Interregnum: New Comtemporary Realities

Maria Hlavajova, the General and Artistic Director of BAK, the seminal curatorial research space in Utrecht, The Netherlands, gives a lecture. Kate Fowle, ICI's Director-at-Large, leads audience discussion afterwards. If it is possible to think of our time as one of interregnum — much in line with how political thinker Antonio Gramsci spoke of the period characterized by a "great variety of morbid symptoms," as a crisis that "consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born" — what, then, is our art to do? Everywhere, we see extant hegemonies losing their grip as we part from the legacy of the modern under the pressures of new contemporary realities. As we hover over the end of one era, unable to grasp the not yet, how can we — with and through art—trace from here the prospective itineraries pointing towards what we once used to call the "future?"
