Lecture | The Parable of the Good Samaritan and The Taming of the Shrew

Literary criticism has traditionally found little of religious or biblical import in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, a play in which the abusive treatment of Katherine—and, by extension, all independent-minded women—has puzzled, troubled, or outraged audiences over the centuries. This lecture calls for a reassessment of the comedy by arguing that it is informed throughout by one of the best known of biblical parables, the story of the Good Samaritan. Medieval and Renaissance interpretations of the parable in fact suggest that, rather than condoning the right of its male characters to cruelly lord it over others, the play puts sharply into question the self-serving and domineering actions of the Lord toward Sly and of Petruchio toward Katherine. Speaker Barry Nass is Associate Professor in the Department of English at Hofstra University.

Performance | Tamy Ben-Tor's New Performance Work

Says the artist: "My consciousness is a sponge absorbing all of contemporary filth. The artistic process for me, in the form of a performance, is to solidify this sponge into a hard stamp tool and press it back onto the audience's consciousness for the duration of the performance. At the end, I hope they come out of it stained, impressed, as I am, by the ailments of this time which we live in." Tamy Ben-Tor was born in Jerusalem and currently lives and works in New York City. She has had solo shows at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center; Kunsthalle Winterthur; and Cubitt, London. Ben-Tor has also participated in exhibitions at ZKM, Karlsruhe; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Biennale of Sydney; Manifesta 7; Mori Museum, Tokyo; MoCA, Los Angeles; Reina Sofia, Madrid; as well as the PERFORMA 05 and PERFORMA 07 Biennials, New York.

Book Signing | Phototgrapher Lydia Panas signs copies of her book The Mark of Abel

For three years, American photographer Lydia Panas invited families to stand before her lens. She was curious to see what would happen. Nothing was deliberate or planned. These diverse groupings of children and adults, relatives and close friends, stood graciously before her, taking positions in relationship to each other, and to the camera. The resulting images from the project are engaging and highly charged psychological family portraits that are gathered together in the artist's debut monograph.
