Concert | JD McPherson performs from his CD Signs & Signifiers

As a visual artist, Broken Arrow, Okla., native JD McPherson is well-versed in the process of working within clearly defined formal parameters, and he employs a similarly rigorous discipline with his music. On Signs & Signifiers, McPherson's seductively kickass debut album, this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshes the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n' roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPherson's rarefied gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures.

Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche. The viewer is placed in the peculiar but exhilarating position of deciding for him- or herself whether the artwork expresses a disjuncture with reality or an uninhibited embracing of interior life. After all, what is more true, the picture that looks real or the picture that feels real; the observer or the observed?

Lecture | Performance Art: Uriel Orlow's Aide-Mémoire 9.0

Artist Uriel Orlow explores blindspots of historical representation in his work and often takes specific locations and events as starting points. Orlow’s most recent project The Short and the Long of It, for instance, documents the failed passage of fourteen international cargo ships through the Suez Canal in 1967. While the crews remained stranded for more than eight years until the canal was reopened, their cold-war political allegiances gave way to the establishment of a communal social system. Orlow interweaves vintage films and photographs shot by crew members with his own footage captured years later on location. As a part of the Interdisciplinary Seminar led by Doug Ashford and Colleen Asper, Orlow presents his lecture-performance Aide-Mémoire. Aide-Mémoire taps into the modes of the travelogue, the old-fashioned slide-show and the ubiquitous powerpoint presentation. Imagined as a collection of scattered fragments of a possible future film and the salvaged shards of research already made, the lecture-performance presents chains of associations, visual clues and narrative fragments that are woven into new configurations and reconstructed meanings. Shown: "The Long and Short of It," 2010.

Talk | Marc Freedman discusses his book The Big Shift: Navigating the New Stage Beyond Midlife

The author sees America’s looming midlife crisis as an opportunity to create a new map of life, one that better suits our longer lifespans. Recognizing and supporting the “encore years” -- the time between the end of midlife and the beginning of anything resembling old age – would, he contends, give millions a second chance to find fulfillment while creating a better world for future generations.

Conference | Autofiction: Literature in France Today

AUTOFICTION, combining two apparently contradictory concerns, autobiography and fiction, is the most important mode of writing in contemporary French literature. Serge Doubrovsky, who coined the term, has described autofiction as combining entirely real content and entirely fictional form. Using their real names, authors insert themselves into their own fictions in a search for self. Following its French beginnings, Autofiction has made headway in many other countries, notably in the U.S.

Screening | Korean Film: Hong Sang-soo's Oki's Movie (2010)

Documentary and narrative filmmaking elegantly merge in Oki's Movie, a quartet of interlocking vignettes by Korean auteur director Hong Sang-soo and one of the most elegant films of his oeuvre. A young woman hikes Seoul's Mount Acha twice, accompanied by different boyfriends: one a fellow student, the other a professor. She documents the trips and then edits together corresponding locations on the mountain: the parking lot, a small pavilion, a wooden bridge; her juxtapositions are revelatory, both of her relationship with each and of the power of cinema.
