Symposium | Bringing It Back: Design and Revivals

The 21st Annual National Design Museum Graduate Student Symposium on the Decorative Arts and Design will present Dr. Thomas Denenberg, Director of Shelburne Museum, and a scholar of the retrospective culture of New England, who will be the symposium's Catherine Hoover Voorsanger Keynote speaker. All design engages with the past, even if only to deny it, but many movements in design an decorative arts history are founded on conscious revivals of the past. Whether Egyptian, Greek, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Colonial, or Modernist, revivals can look back just a few decades or millennia. Revivals can be soberly archaeological or promote a historical fantasy. Some revivalist movements are primarily stylistic, while, for others, idealized notions of history are invested with social, political or moral meaning in the present.

Video | Mike Kelley: Video Tribute

Pay tribute to Mike Kelley with a daylong screening of his remarkable video works, many of which were created with collaborators such as Paul McCarthy and Michael Smith. This 12-hour program, presented in coordination with the Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, will include the screening of such seminal work as The Banana Man (1983); Heidi (1992), made in collaboration with Paul McCarthy; Superman Recites Selections from 'The Bell Jar' and Other Works by Sylvia Plath (1999); Extracurricular Activity Projective Reconstruction #1 (Domestic Scene) (2000); Day Is Done, Part 1 (2005-6); as well as the recent work A Voyage of Growth and Discovery (2011), made in collaboration with Michael Smith. Mike Kelley (1954-2012) was one of the most transgressive contemporary artists of the second half of the 20th century. His work sought to interrogate the American psyche by subverting depictions of social practices and rituals, including the role of religion, authority, nationalism, adolescence, sexual identity, and gender. Furthermore, Kelley was an inspired, eccentric thinker and writer who provided support and encouragement to the many artists he admired.

Conference | Spanish Architecture: History, Criticism, Practice, and Propaganda (1950s-1990s)

In the last decades of the twentieth century through to the beginning of the current economic crisis, Spain became a place of pilgrimage for architects, students, and photographers from all over the world. The buildings that attracted them included some of the most outstanding and significant works by the architects of the so-called international ”star system.” At the same time, Spain was contributing to the international scene by exporting some of its most talented architects such as Rafael Moneo, Enric Miralles, Juan Navarro Baldeweg, Josep Lluís Mateo, or Alejandro Zaera-Polo, to name but a few. After decades of ostracism, Spain was finally participating in architecture’s transnational flows. This conference will revisit the historical origins and sources of the internationalization of Spanish architecture.
