Opening Reception | Lillian Bassman's Lingerie, a Show of Fashion Illustration

Lillian Bassman was born in 1917 into an immigrant family of free-thinking intellectuals, and was brought up with a mindset that allowed her to live as an independent and unconventional woman. She worked as a textile designer and fashion illustrator before working at Harper's Bazaar with Alexey Brodovitch, and ultimately becoming a photographer. Bassman's fashion images are unique, and acheieve their effect through manipulation in the dark room. Appearing in Harper's Bazaar from the 1940's to the 1960's, her work was categorized by their elegance and grace.Bassman had transformed these photographs into original works of art through her darkroom techniques in which she blurs and bleaches the images, investing them with poetry, mystery, and glamour.

Opening Reception | Photographs: Denis Darzacq's Act: Meditations on the Disabled Body

Denis Darzacq’s work often portrays people using their bodies to express a profound sense of freedom from the limitations that life has placed on them. In his latest work, he worked with young adults leading difficult lives, their bodies challenged by conditions such as Down’s Syndrome or cerebral palsy. The results offer an experience of deeply-felt images – tender, warm, and inviting. Viewers are brought up-close and personal with thoughts they might not want to confront, yet the images of Darzacq’s subjects are irresistible. Shown: "Maloyn Chatelin Brest, Finistère, France," 2010, 35 x 49".

Slide Lecture | Kevin Gutzman discusses his book James Madison and the Making of America

In this visual presentation, the author looks beyond Madison's traditional moniker, "The Father of the Constitution,” to find a more complex and realistic portrait of this influential Founding Father. Instead of an idealized portrait of Madison, he treats the audience to the story of a man who often performed his founding deeds in spite of himself.

Author Reading | Sarah Schulman reads from her book Gentrification of the Mind

In her gripping memoir of the AIDS years (1981–1996), Sarah Schulman recalls how much of the rebellious queer culture, cheap rents, and a vibrant downtown arts movement vanished almost overnight to be replaced by gay conservative spokespeople and mainstream consumerism. Interweaving personal reminiscence with cogent analysis, Schulman details her experience as a witness to the loss of a generation’s imagination and the consequences of that loss. To be followed by a book signing.

Reading | The Inner Circle: A Live Libretto Reading

A live libretto reading of The Inner Circle, an opera newly commissioned by Opera on Tap as part of its Roadworks Series. Libretto by Kate Gale. ABOUT THE INNER CIRCLE: Can there be a timelier subject for an opera than Dr. Kinsey? The controversial Svengali or hero (depending on who you ask) who either enlightened or corrupted a captivated culture (also depending on who you ask), whose name we know but whose legacy has yet to be fully or appropriately explored, especially on the operatic stage. Kinsey’s story is about the very discovery of—or at least the discussion of—sex in what was then a far more puritanical country, and it is a subject to which opera is ideally suited and yet with which it has a complicated history (opera audiences being, at least as popular assessments would have it, essentially conservative).

Discussion | A Look at Uncle Tom's Cabin with Pulitzer Prize Winner Jane Smiley

Originally published in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic novel has been lauded and derided, but it has always been discussed. From the virtuous Eva, to the evil Simon Legree, to Uncle Tom, the characters have become known outside of the book. Novelists Jane Smiley (A Thousand Acres), who wrote the introduction to the 2001 Modern Library edition, and Roxana Robinson, whose great-great-great aunt was Harriet Beecher Stowe, will discuss the lasting influence of the novel and its relevance in today's society.

Lecture | Into the Cosmic Weather: Imagination as Value

Scholar Joan Richardson, whose work reflects an interest in the way that philosophy, natural history and science intersect with literature, will give a talk on the influence of Darwin on Ralph Waldo Emerson and those following him into newly imagined territories of becoming. The title of the talk is from a 1948 Wallace Stevens lecture, where he called mind “the most terrible force in the world,”“a violence from within that protects us from a violence without.” Stevens also said imagination “creates images that are independent of their originals.” Richardson will consider these aspects by tracing Stevens back to Emerson.

Performance | Performance: Duncan McCargo & Stephanie Winters' Titanic Tales: Stories of Courage and Cowardice

Titanic Tales: Stories of Courage and Cowardice will have its world premiere on the date on which, 100 years ago, the RMS Titanic was mid-voyage on the way to its fateful encounter with the iceberg that led to the ship’s tragic loss on the night of April 15, 1912. The performance follows the survivors of the Titanic’s tragic maiden voyage through the highs and lows of that fateful night. Titanic Tales is part theater, part concert, part history. Poignant firsthand accounts illustrate how great danger can bring out the best—and sometimes the worst—in people. The remarkable recollections of actual survivors (taken from testimony given at British and American Boards of Inquiry) are evocatively complemented by live music as played by the ship's legendary band. A blend of popular song, light classics and ragtime conjure the atmosphere and elegance of life aboard the ship.

Performance | Comedy: Backlash

In the evening, by the moonlight, (or perhaps before twilight), in late spring a child sits by an open window and awaits the summer. He dreams about the County Fair, a place where he can play, eat cotton candy, and just be happy. For cover band artists Gregory von Portz and Ashley Rebecca King, the county fair means something different all together: animosity, jealousy and ceaseless obsession. This is BACKLASH, a combination rock concert/backroom cabaret/interior design showroom, in which Von Portz and King will attempt to claw and scratch their way to victory over a childhood nemesis through song.
