Lecture | Return of the Soldier: The Scots in America during World War I

Research carried out at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, shows that during WWI hundreds of Scottish men who emigrated to America at the turn of the century returned to fight for their mother country at the outbreak of the First World War. Many of the men had made a good life for themselves in America and were under no obligation to return to Scotland. Tragically, many of the volunteers did not return to America as they were killed on the battlefields or died in military hospitals. This public lecture and discussion will explore the legacy of the Scots in America during this traumatic period.

Discussion | Disappearing Act IV European Film Festival

The festival has one of the most intriguing and peculiar names around: Disappearing Act. It is a name that evokes wonder and melancholy; a sense of cultures past and present; of peoples amalgamated and gentrified; of something fleeting and then absent, yet still existing somewhere, firmly defined by the ephemeral and mercurial nature of magic; of creating something that is of the euphoric truth. In other words, the act of telling a story. The festival showcases 25 contemporary European films from Austria, the Wallonia-Brussels and Flanders regions of Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Tonight's event is a pre-festival panel disussion.

Discussion | Genius Rocket: How Anybody Can Get into the Ad Game

To most viewers, this year's Super Bowl commercials were predictable and boring. And surprisingly, the few ads that generated buzz were created by amateurs. Is user-generated content the wave of the future? And if so, what does this mean for the industry? With: Peter LaMotte, President, GeniusRocket. Moderator: Erin Griffith, Writer, PandoDaily
