The first account of a forgotten attempt to reform the sodomy laws in 1820s Britain. At the center of these events was a small group of men who were members of Parliament, who strongly identified with their feelings of same-sex desire, who explicitly wrote that such feelings were inborn and natural in them, and who based their political activism (ie: their lobbying of fellow parliamentarians to end the death penalty for sodomy) on this self-understanding. This book will demonstrate how these men’s identity was a product of their particular time, place, and circumstances, and will not attempt to displace the arguments for the late nineteenth century as the point of origin for what we think of as a modern gay identity.
