The heat of summer is upon us, and the city is brimming with activities, both out in the fresh air and inside in the comfort of climate-controlled air-conditioned concert halls.
Lincoln Center leads the way indoors and out, with performances on three of the institution's signature series: Lincoln Center Festival, Mostly Mozart and Lincoln Center Out of Doors.
The Lincoln Center Festival launches with Paradise Interrupted (July 13-16), a new opera by the New York-based composer Huang Ruo. The work re-imagines the story of Eve, with a style that blends western music and with traditional Chinese harmonies and instruments. Other LC Festival highlights include a Japanese take on the musical Chicago (July 20-24) and three concerts celebrating Steve Reich's music (July 16, 19 and 21). Tickets on sale at LC's website.
Mostly Mozart is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and its especially delicious season kicks off on July 22 with a free performance outside at Damrosh Park. Speaking of 'free', the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) performs 15 free 'micro-concerts' of new works on Hearst Plaza July 27-August 7. Another free Mostly Mozart event is on August 13, the public domain by David Lang. If you are interested in being part of the 1000-voice choir of this work, which was created especially for Mostly Mozart's anniversary, sign up ahead of time at Mostly Mozart's website.
It seems like Lincoln Center Out Of Doors has a free performance just about every day from July 20 to August 13. Highlights include the South African superstars Ladysmith Black Mambazo (July 21) and the Americana Fest (August 6-7).
One more series at Lincoln Center is presented by one of its constituent organizations, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Crowd-pleasing programs performed by CMS core artists are offered at Alice Tully Hall on July 6, 10 and 13. Tickets at CMS's website.
Carnegie Hall is pretty quiet during the summer months, but its National Youth Orchestra program is in full swing. This group of uber-talented youth from all over the country perform Mozart and Bruckner with Christoph Eschenbach conducting and piano soloist Emanuel Ax at Carnegie Hall on July 14, before heading off for their European tour. Tickets via Carnegie's website.
Czech Center New York has created a tradition of weekly summertime films on its upper east side rooftop (321 E 73rd Street). This year, silent horror films with live accompaniment fill the slot every Tuesday, beginning on July 12 with Jekyll and Hyde, with music provided by the trio The Ghost. Different films and performers are on July 19, 26, August 2, 9 and 16. Details and advance tickets at czechcenter.com.
Also: Summerstage New York offers its always-great free concerts in the five boroughs throughout the summer, and Celebrate Brooklyn! has some terrific artists performing at Prospect Park through August.
