Music in Your Nabe

Gail Wein
March 01, 2016

I love being able to walk down the street from my apartment to get to a great concert. So I am especially delighted that the Washington Heights Chamber Orchestra launched its first season this year. On March 12, the WHCO presents PUBLIQuartet, on April 2 the chamber orchestra plays Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Revueltas, and the season closes with New Century Jazz Quintet on April 7. All concerts are at Fort Washington Collegiate Church (181st Street and Fort Washington Ave) and admission is free.

Of course, there are performances in most every neighborhood around the city. The String Orchestra of Brooklyn presents a season of performances in that borough; coming up is the String Theories series at Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn), March 22, 23, 24. Tickets available in advance online or at the door.

Carnegie Hall also brings its offerings to your neighborhood, with free concerts in every borough throughout the season. Mivos Quartet performs at Pregones Theater in the Bronx on March 2, tenor Ben Bliss and pianist Lachlan Glen are at St. Michael's Church on Manhattan's upper west side on March 12, taiko drumming group Soh Daiko are at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center in Queens on March 19. Details and more concerts are on Carnegie's website. This month Carnegie Hall also presents a performance of West Side Story at the Knockdown Center (a restored factory in Queens) on March 4, 5 and 6. Tickets via their website.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has taken over the building that housed the Whitney Museum on the upper east side (and if you haven't been to the new Whitney downtown, I highly recommend checking it out.) The Met Breuer, as it is now called, is on Madison Avenue at 75th Street, and it opens on March 18, with special events all weekend long. Keep an eye out for stupendous performances at the new space, beginning with Vijay Iyer's "performance residency", with performances in the building's lobby gallery March 18-31.
